The next closest candidate in the local riding, trailing

Mazier by 19,538 votes, was Laverne Lewycky, who once
again threw his hat in the ring for the New Democrats.
Lewycky received 5,404 votes. Coming in a close third
was the Liberal party who came on board late in the race
with Cathy Scofield-Singh as their local riding candidate.
5,103 Westman Liberals cast their vote for her during the
election. The candidate coming in fourth in Dauphin-
Swan River-Neepawa was the Green Party’s Kate Storey
with 2,090 votes. Electors in the local riding also cast 700
votes for People’s Party candidate, Frank Godon and 447
votes for Jennie Johnson of the Christian Heritage Party.
Comparing Monday’s election to the last Feder-
al election in 2015, the local riding saw some notable
changes. Voter turnout in Dauphin-Swan River-Neepawa
was down slightly from 65.2 percent in 2015 to 62.68 per-
cent in 2019. Even though there were fewer voters cast-
ing their ballots in Monday’s election, three-of-the-four
returning political parties saw an increase in votes over
the 2015 election. The Conservatives gained more than
5,600 votes this time around – in 2015, MP Sopuck was
re-elected with 19,276 votes. The Green Party and its re-
turning candidate, Kate Storey gained almost 500 votes
over the 1,592 they received in 2015. Another returning
candidate, Leverne Lewycky and the NDP gained just
over 300 votes over the 5,097 votes earned in the previ-
ous election. However, the local riding lost a great deal
of support for the Liberal party in this year’s election. In
2015, local Liberal candidate, Ray Piche, earned more
than 7,000 votes over this year’s candidate. In the previ-
ous election, Piche earned 12,276 votes putting the Lib-
erals in second behind M.P. Sopuck and the Conserva-
tives. The fourth candidate to run in the 2015 election
in Dauphin-Swan River-Neepawa was former M.P. Inky
Mark, Independent earning 3,357 votes.
