Carbon Tax e
What is a carbon tax?
Carbon tax is a form of pollution tax. It levies a fee on the
production, distribution or use of fossil fuels based on how
much carbon their combustion emits. The government sets a
price per ton on carbon, then translates it into a tax on
electricity, natural gas or oil

How did you find it?

I wanted to find something about carbon tax so instead of using an article I looked for a podcast. I looked up
“global warming carbon tax” and found this site
https://www.npr.org/sections/money/2018/07/18/630267782/episode-472-the-one-page-plan-to-fix-global-w

How do you know it’s reliable?

After hearing the podcast it sounded legit. They had professionals go on the podcast and give valid
information.

I feel like it's pretty opinionated but this is something that will help global warming so it's fine
Introduction (Summary)
● In 2013, They talked to a couple economists about a very simple idea that could solve the climate

change problem: Tax carbon emissions. A carbon tax could be paired with cuts in the income tax.

○ At the time they made a bold prediction. They promised to revisit their prediction in the summer

of 2018, exactly five years after they aired the original episode, they checked in with one of those

economists to find out how carbon taxes have fared around the world.

○ The costs of a carbon tax would not be evenly distributed among U.S. households.

○ For example, the additional costs from higher prices would consume a greater share of income

for low-income households than for higher-income households, because low-income households

generally spend a larger percentage of their income on emission-intensive goods.

Details/Analysis (takeaways)
● In the first year of a carbon tax it would rise 25 cents a gallon
● By 2050 they figured it would be a dollar extra per gallon
○ Electric bill will go up more, and airplane flights would be way more also another big ticket is food
shipments

● One of the most carbon intensive activities is concrete

○ Concrete is cement with gravel and sand but to produce sand it takes lots of arbor dioxide making
one ton of cement makes 8/10 of a ton of c02
■ 50% of the emissions is directly related to process emissions which is a chemical step that is
unavoidable
Research shows that carbon taxes effectively reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Economists generally argue that
carbon taxes are the most efficient and effective way to curb climate change, with the least adverse effects on
the economy.

● In 2008, B.C. implemented North America's first broad-based carbon tax.
