Personal Statement

I was born and raised in Mexico till i was 10 years old, I never knew I would come to a place

where I could have more opportunities than I would’ve ever have in Mexico, a place I can be

myself, follow my dreams, build my own path and learn new languages.

It’s been about 6 years since i came from Mexico, recently as my english teacher told us we needed

to write a personal statement I remembered when I first came to the United States and the

difficulties I had to face learning a new language.

It was around April of 2013 when I started attending 5th grade in California, the school secretary

presented to me a girl who was going to help me get adjusted in school. She was tall, fair skin, red

curly hair and had a beautiful smile, her name was Jazmine. “Hola soy Jazmine y te voy a ayudar

en lo que ocupes,” “Hello i'm Jazmine, and i'm going to help you with anything you need,” she

said with a smile on her face. I only said “thanks,” I was nervous since i was in a new environment.

The first two weeks she helped me translate with some work and helped me make some friends but

it was still hard since sometimes we would change classes and we would separate, even during

lunch time since she had her own friends. I was getting a little stressed and sad since I couldn't

understand english. One day I told my mother if we could move back to Mexico and she asked me

with a worried face “Why? Did something happen? Do they bully you? What’s wrong so i can go

to school and report it.” I answered with a sad face “It’s nothing like that it’s just hard, I can't

understand what they are saying, and I feel like crying because i can't understand them.” “Well

it’s normal to not understand at first, but as time goes by, you are going to be able to understand

don’t give up,” she said with a smile on her face. A week passed by and i got a schedule that i was

going to attend a class it would help me learn english (I was guessing my mother went to school).

I loved that class we would sit down and we would have an ipad and go to an app named “Rosetta
Stone” in that app we would speak, write, read, and learn vocabulary and phrases it was really

helpful. I started talking with my classmates and my teacher in english, it was kind of difficult at

first mostly pronouncing some words since it had like different sounds but with practice I got

better. I finished 5th grade and i went to middle school, I knew how to speak english now (not

much, but it was better than nothing).

Ever since I knew how to speak english i decided to help others that couldn’t understand it, and

tell them what my mother once told me; “It’s normal to not understand at first, but as time goes

by, you are going to be able to understand don’t give up.” Helping in learning english was a good

thought since I know how it feels to move to a new place and can’t understand what they are

saying.
