Foreword
This standard has been prepared by Technical Committee Stahlwasserbau of the NormenausschuB Wasser-
wesen (Water Practice Standards Committee).
Amendments
This standard differs from DIN 19704 and DIN 19705, September 1976 editions, in that these standards have
been completely revised and combined into one standard which includes a new safety concept based on
ultimate limit state.
Previous editions
DIN 19704: 1958-06, 1963-12, 1976-09; DIN 19705: 1963-12, 1976-09.
References to the DIN 19704 series are to the May 1998 editions.

In case of doubt. the German-language original should be consulted as the authoritative text.
1 Scope
This standard covers electrical equipment for drives in hydraulic steel structures as specified in clause 1 of
DIN 19704-1, May 1998 edition, that is directly connected with machinery and steel structures.
2 Normative references
This Standard incorporates by dated or undated reference, provisions from other publications. These normative
references are cited at the appropriate places in the text and the titles of the publications are listed below. For
dated references, subsequent amendments to or revisions of any of these publications apply to this Standard
. only when incorporated in it by amendment or revision. For undated references, the latest edition of the
publication referred to applies.

3 General
3.1 Design
The design and installation of electrical equipment used for the drives in hydraulic steel structures shall be
subject to the relevant electrotechnical regulations, particularly DIN and DIN EN Standards and VDE specifi-
cations (e.g. the standards of the DIN VDE 0100 and DIN EN 60204-1 series).
It shall be the responsibility of the client to specify the quantity of information to be saved, the way it is to be
saved, and the timescale.
4 Electrical equipment
4.1 General
A service life of 35 years shall be assumed for electrical equipment, with the exception of parts subject to wear.
When designing air and creep distances, at least pollution severity grade 3 and overvoltage category III to
DIN VDE 0110-1 shall be taken into account.
The electrical equipment shall withstand harsh operating conditions (e.g. increased stresses due to mechanical
loading, solar radiation, weathering, water, electro-magnetic fields and lightning; see DIN VDE 0100-510). They
shall have a minimum degree of protection of IP 54 (see DIN VDE 0470-1) and shall operate properly within the
ambient temperature range specified by the client.
4.3 Cables
Cables shall be laid in one length (Le. not cut in sections).
CabJes forming part of process measuring and control equipment shall be screened.
In the vicinity of drives, only flexible cables shall be used. They shall be designed to accommodate average
mechanical stress, and shall be resistant to oil and, where used externally, ultraviolet radiation.
Cables on machinery and hydraulic steel components also require protection against mechanical stress.
4.4 Connections
Cables that belong to a drive shall be grouped at the drive within a housing with terminals. Plug connectors may
also be used for drive assemblies. The client shall specify if this is not to apply to the main motor power circuit.
The terminals for the main power circuits shall be provided with extra covering or other means of protection.
The electrical connection points of process measuring and cohtrol equipment fitted to the machinery or the
associated steel structures shall be connected to terminal blocks so as to be floating. Depending on the type
of screening selected, the cable screening shall be connected to an insulated bus or individual insulated
terminals.
If the connections of more than one drive are combined at one interface, the terminals shall be suitably grouped.
5 Control functions
5.1 Switch-off .at end position
End positions shall be detected via position-actuated limit switches or equivalent position- measuring systems.
This also applies to hydraulic systems that are switched off by means of a pressure switch.
For electro-mechanical drives, a circuit ensuring switch-off at end position shall be provided in the control
circuit and an all-pole emergency stop circuit in the main circuit. Both circuits shall be energized independently
of each other. If the risk assessment so permits, an emergency stop may be effected by a control limit switch
operating according to the fail-safe principle and acting on an additional main switching unit. Equivalent
systems or procedures are permissible, including torque switches, load cells and pressure switches.
If closed loop drives have no main power disconnection feature, further circuits shall be used in addition to the
circuit, ensuring switch-off at end positions.
6 Casings
It is recommended that casings of electrical equipment be made from sheet steel provided with a protective
coating that consists of a minimum of a priming coat and two finishing coats, or equivalent.
Casings for use in rooms designated by the client as wet and casing§intended to stand in the open shall be
made of corrosion-resistant materials (e.g. stainless steel, aluminium and polyester).
Casings shall have a minimum degree of protection of IP 54 to DIN VDE 0470-1 or DIN VDE 0530-5 and pressure
compensation points, except for casings in rooms designated by the client as being dry and low-dust.
If the ambient conditions require, a thermostat-controlled casing heating and, if required, forced ventilation,
shall be provided.
