3 General
3.1 Design
The design and installation of electrical equipment used for the drives in hydraulic steel structures shall be
subject to the relevant electrotechnical regulations, particularly DIN and DIN EN Standards and VDE specifi-
cations (e.g. the standards of the DIN VDE 0100 and DIN EN 60204-1 series).

3.2 Safety requirements

The safety requirements to be met by process measuring and control equipment in respect of hazards due to
. ·~functional faults shall be determined by risk assessment and shall be taken into account in the design of the
drive and control design systems (see DIN V 19250).
Back-up drives, blocking and locking systems and auxiliary drives or similar devices shall be electrically
interlocked or designed so as to prevent unauthorized actuation.
Each drive shall have an emergency stop actuator (see DIN EN 418).
The motion of mechanical locking devices shall be controlled by limit switches.
Safety devices shall be deSigned according to the fail-safe principle, i.e. they are to cause a moving element
to be locked whenever there is a voltage loss, electrical equipment failure or cable break. They shall act on the
switchgear of the main circuit of the relevant drive and prevent machine movements that are liable to lead to
a hazardous situation.

3.3 Protective measures

Electrical heaters on hydraulic steel structures shall be protected by providing a residual current protective
device (see DIN VDE 0100-410). This shall also apply in cases where electrical equipment is operated under
water with a rated voltage greater than 50 V AC.
Equipotential bonding shall be provided in rooms for drive systems.

3.4 Control process memory

When using automation systems (e.g. a programmable control system (PCS), the process sequence shall be
saved according to the fail-safe principle.
Page 3
DIN 19704-3 : 2000-00

It shall be the responsibility of the client to specify the quantity of information to be saved, the way it is to be
saved, and the timescale.

4 Electrical equipment
4.1 General
A service life of 35 years shall be assumed for electrical equipment, with the exception of parts subject to wear.
When designing air and creep distances, at least pollution severity grade 3 and overvoltage category III to
DIN VDE 0110-1 shall be taken into account.
The electrical equipment shall withstand harsh operating conditions (e.g. increased stresses due to mechanical
loading, solar radiation, weathering, water, electro-magnetic fields and lightning; see DIN VDE 0100-510). They
shall have a minimum degree of protection of IP 54 (see DIN VDE 0470-1) and shall operate properly within the
ambient temperature range specified by the client.

4.2 Motors and brakes

Corrosion protection of motors and brakes shall be designed to withstand severe climatic conditions. The
windings shall be impregnated for use in high humidity (using a substance with a very high dry resin content).
If there is a risk of condensation, anti-condensation heaters shall be fitted- or equivalent measures taken.
Winding temperature sensors and recording equipment shall, be provided.
The motor bearings shall be sealed and shall be lubricated to last their service life.
Motors and brake ventilation housings shall have a minimum degree of protection of IP 54 (cf. DIN VDE 0530-5).
They shall be designed and operated on the principles outlined in DIN EN 60034-1.

4.3 Cables
Cables shall be laid in one length (Le. not cut in sections).
CabJes forming part of process measuring and control equipment shall be screened.
In the vicinity of drives, only flexible cables shall be used. They shall be designed to accommodate average
mechanical stress, and shall be resistant to oil and, where used externally, ultraviolet radiation.
Cables on machinery and hydraulic steel components also require protection against mechanical stress.

4.4 Connections
Cables that belong to a drive shall be grouped at the drive within a housing with terminals. Plug connectors may
also be used for drive assemblies. The client shall specify if this is not to apply to the main motor power circuit.
The terminals for the main power circuits shall be provided with extra covering or other means of protection.
The electrical connection points of process measuring and cohtrol equipment fitted to the machinery or the
associated steel structures shall be connected to terminal blocks so as to be floating. Depending on the type
of screening selected, the cable screening shall be connected to an insulated bus or individual insulated
terminals.
If the connections of more than one drive are combined at one interface, the terminals shall be suitably grouped.

4.5 Auxiliary equipment

Electrical heaters shall be fitted with thermostat-controlled protection against overheating and be capable of
operating in the manual and automatic modes. Heating elements shall be suitable for use in air (dry operation).
The-correct functioning of equipment such as air bubbler systems, mixing devices, resistance heaters, lubri-
cation systems and similar devices shall be monitored electrically.

4.6 Limit switches and pressure switches

Limit switches shall have a minimum degree of protection of IP 65 to DIN VDE 0470-1.
Limit switches and pressure switches shall each have a minimum of one break and one make function.
The switching hysteresis, repeatability and resolution of the setting range shall be suited to the particular
application.
The safe actuating distance (operating distance) of contactless proximity switches shall have a reserve of at
least 20%.
Mechanical limit switches shall have jump contacts and a corresponding mechanical lag for the individual
movements.
The on/off or other position of proximity switches and pressure switches shall be clearly recognizable from
outside (e.g. by using LEDs).

DIN 19704-3 : 2000-00

4.7 Overload protection devices

Overload protection devices (e.g. couplings and load cells), shall have auxiliary contacts for control and sig-
nalling purposes.
Disconnect test terminals shall be provided for electrical force measuring systems for the connection of por-
table test equipment.
The force measuring system shall be fitted with a minimum of two adjustable limit markers.
Drives whose design is based not on the maximum possible drive torque (e.g. motor stalling torque) but on a
torque which is electrically pre-set (e.g. by means of a converter) shall have an additional overload protection
device (cf. subclauses 8.3 and 8.4 of DIN 19704-1), which shall act independently of the system limiting the
motor torque (cf. subclause 3.2).

4.8 Monitoring systems

Where the gate position is to be electrically monitored, position indicators and position transducers (e.g.
position-measuring systems) shall be provided (cf. subclause 9.2.5 of DIN 19704-2).
Hydraulic oil reservoirs shall be fitted with an oil level monitor (e.g. limit monitors with a minimum of two
adjustable limiting contacts).
Oil filters in hydraulic systems that are fitted with a clogging indicator shall have a signalling contact.

5 Control functions
5.1 Switch-off .at end position
End positions shall be detected via position-actuated limit switches or equivalent position- measuring systems.
This also applies to hydraulic systems that are switched off by means of a pressure switch.
For electro-mechanical drives, a circuit ensuring switch-off at end position shall be provided in the control
circuit and an all-pole emergency stop circuit in the main circuit. Both circuits shall be energized independently
of each other. If the risk assessment so permits, an emergency stop may be effected by a control limit switch
operating according to the fail-safe principle and acting on an additional main switching unit. Equivalent
systems or procedures are permissible, including torque switches, load cells and pressure switches.
If closed loop drives have no main power disconnection feature, further circuits shall be used in addition to the
circuit, ensuring switch-off at end positions.

5.2 Double-acting drives

The limiting values for synchronization monitoring shall be continuously adjustable. Once the set values have
been reached, the drive shall be stopped (cf. subclause 9.2.4 of DIN 19704-2).

6 Casings
It is recommended that casings of electrical equipment be made from sheet steel provided with a protective
coating that consists of a minimum of a priming coat and two finishing coats, or equivalent.
Casings for use in rooms designated by the client as wet and casing§intended to stand in the open shall be
made of corrosion-resistant materials (e.g. stainless steel, aluminium and polyester).
Casings shall have a minimum degree of protection of IP 54 to DIN VDE 0470-1 or DIN VDE 0530-5 and pressure
compensation points, except for casings in rooms designated by the client as being dry and low-dust.
If the ambient conditions require, a thermostat-controlled casing heating and, if required, forced ventilation,
shall be provided.

7 Steel framing and other supporting elements

Steel framing and supporting steel elements (e.g. base frames and mounting rails) shall be hot-dip galvanized.
Other corrosion-resistant materials may be used if they are suitable for the given operating conditions.
Electrolytic corrosion shall be prevented.
