FUNCTION OVERCURRENT # 51
RELAY TEST PLAN
SOURCES 1: HIGH POWER CURRENT SOURCE
REQUIRED 1: D.C. CURRENT SLAVE SOURCE

I. INTRODUCTION

This test plan describes the use of Doble F2000 test instruments to perform the manufacturers’acceptance tests. Relay
settings and test connections are included.

II. DESCRIPTION OF RELAY

The Type CO series of protective relays are used to sense the current level in an A.C. line, the relay operates (trips) when the
current exceeds the relay setting. The operating time is inversely proportional to the current , as a multiple of the set value.
The current setting is selected by a tap screw and the operating time can be scaled by a time dial which offsets the disc from
the maximum time position. The relay uses an induction disc current element. Different models (e.g. CO---9, CO---11) have
different current---time curves. Other options include Instantaneous unit (normal or high dropout) for high speed tripping
on heavy overcurrents, torque control input to allow remote enabling from another relay, and contact opening action for
A.C. tripping duty. The CO---4 includes an auxiliary timer for use with air circuit breakers.

IV. PRECAUTIONS

***************************** WARNING *****************************

Dangerous and potentially fatal voltages can be developed across the output terminals of any Doble F2000 Test Instrument.

Always turn the source output OFF before connecting , removing or touching any output terminal or cable, use extreme
caution when turning on or using any Doble F2000 Test Instrument.

NEVER GROUND ANY TEST INSTRUMENT OUTPUT CONNECTION.

NOTE:
ALWAYS TEST THIS RELAY IN ITS CASE AND IN A VERTICAL POSITION. USE LOWEST PRACTICAL
SOURCE RANGE FOR BEST RESOLUTION AND MAXIMIZED TEST POWER.

V. SETUP AND PROCEDURE

V.A. Assemble the sources required and connect all timing, control, and supply cables.

V.B. If relay has torque control option connect terminals 5 and 6 together.

V.C. For each test:

V.C.1. Assign sources as shown in preset columns.

V.C.2. Connect source outputs to relay inputs as shown in preset column. (input of slave D.C. source must be con-
nected to output of A.C. source only when V/I DC is specified).

V.C.3. Run test as defined in preset and action columns.

XI.B. If terminals 5 and 6 were connected together in section 5.2 remove this temporary connection. Ensure relay has been
restored to normal service condition.
