Syncom

NASA selected Hughes Aircraft to build the Project Syncom


experimental communications satellites. Syncom will be placed
in a 2 2 , 3 0 0 mile synchronous orbit. The program will test a small
active satellite weighing about 50 pounds in a 24-hour orbit.

Frequencies will be 8000 mc from ground to satellite and

scheduled for late next year.

Echo 1

C o l l i n s s c i e n t i s t s e s t i m a t e that the Echo balloon, now a y e a r


old, has deflated to half its original size and i s wrinkled and caved
in, although still reflecting signals. Echo 1 was launched Aug.12,
1960, and was expected to remain in orbit only a few weeks at that
time. Collins scientists estimated the balloon will continue to drop
in altitude and slow down until about 1962 or 1963, when heavier
a t m o s p h e r e c l o s e t o t h e e a r t h will c a u s e it to disintegrate.
