CHAPTER 2

SITUATIONAL ANALYSIS

This chapter presents the industry review which comprises the related studies and

literatures, the target market, the competition in the industry and the SWOT (strength,

weaknesses, opportunities and threats) analysis.

2.1 Industry Review

Below are industry review which presented and conducted. These have been taken

to significance the study that would like to emphasize.

Dried batuan fruits were used by ancient Indians in treating different types of

diseases because of its medicinal properties. It contains anti-inflammatory properties,

which can relieve inflammations in the body. Eating fresh batuan can reduce the cholesterol

levels in the body, which is good and has beneficial effects for people who have

hypertension. Irritated skin can be cured by resin that can be extracted from batuan by

simply applying it on the skin. It also contains a lot of antioxidants, which fight free radicals

from the body that can cause several types of diseases in the body. It is also rich in vitamin

C, which can help to boost our immune system and to the overall body’s health

There are just about as many different types of condiments as there are different

types of food, with various cultures having versions that are unique or particularly

important to the people of that culture (www.herbs.com, 2000).

Efforts must be given not only to protect and conserve wild fruits such as batuan

but also to maintain and improve the state of their habitat. The study proposes the

following: increasing one's level of awareness regarding the state of edible wild fruits

through information dissemination campaigns to boost the current value of these fruits,

additional declaration of protected areas, especially in the province of Iloilo where rare

batuan fruits mentioned in this study are found, and promoting the sustainable use of edible

wild fruits in the society (Chua-Barcelo, 2014).

Seed storage proteins which accumulate in high amounts in some plant seeds as

sources of nutrients for germinating seeds constitute an important source of dietary proteins

for human consumption. In the Philippines, many edible, indigenous, seed-bearing fruit

trees which are known only by the local people provide income as well as cheap sources

of their dietary proteins. “Batuan”, Garcinia binucao (Blco.) Choisy, is one of the lesser-

known, indigenous, seed-bearing fruit trees identified with export potential (de la Cruz,

2013). The fruit which is mainly used as souring agent in native dishes contains several

(more or less 7) large, edible seeds (Quevedo, 2013; Florido and Cortiguerra, 2003).

However, the quality and quantity of the seed protein of “batuan” fruit remains little if none

at all has been published to date. Quevedo (2013) revealed that the protein content of

“batuan” fruits is generally low (less than 10%) with the seeds containing the highest.

Characterization of the seed storage proteins in “batuan” fruit is important since it is

consumed and considered as a favorite souring agent by Filipinos especially in some part

of the provinces of Negros Occidental, Iloilo, Leyte, Masbate and in other places in the

Philippines (Florido and Cortiguerra, 2003; Cojuangco, 2012; de la Cruz, 2013). During
fruiting season, the fruits are processed into various products such as salted puree, jam,

jelly, prunes, and candies.

Thus, information in terms of protein quality and quantity are very valuable and

may make significant contribution to its nutrient quality and processing properties as well

as its potential application in food processing. Furthermore, analysis of the seed storage

proteins in “batuan” may also provide insight into characterization of genetic diversity,

improvement of nutritional quality, and seed development for “batuan”. This article

presents the results on the extraction and characterization of the protein in “batuan” seed.

“Batuan” seed proteins were evaluated for their relative amount and amino acid

composition. An attempt was also made to predict its nutritional quality.

According to P. J. Restituto (2017), The study found that batuan leaf and fruit are

potential preventive remedies for lowering postprandial hyperglycemia, a common

diabetes complication that happens after eating, resulting in abnormally high blood

glucose or blood sugar levels.

The study also sought to determine the phytochemical content or biologically

active compounds of batuan. At the same time, it looked at how the fruit’s antioxidant

properties counter the production of free radicals that damage cells. It also examined the

fruit’s α-glucosidase or alpha-glucosidase inhibition action, similar to those found in anti-

diabetic drugs used for type 2 diabetes.

Synthesis

The primary raw materials for the Batuan powder is batuan fruit. This Batuan fruit

has a sour that give a best and surprising taste to every dishes which can give a lot of

benefits in our body. It is a non-acidic as to compare to other souring ingredients like

compare to tamarind because it can promotes obesity if it is frequent used. It is natural and

healthy that business could develop and experiment into a useful, beneficial of an

affordable items. Aside from a delicious fruit, you can eat raw, you can used it, you can

products.

2.2 Target Market

The target market determines the business prospects and the customers who want

to patronize the products. APBP Manufacturing Company has a target market which is the

primary market that includes the individual household of Conception Sariaya.

2.3 Competitions

Competition arises whenever at least two parties strive for a goal which cannot be

shared and always present in the business which serve as the challenge between the existing

from on how they are able to maintain and sustain their standing in the market. They must

be able to identify and know who are the competitors and on how they are going to stand
out. Competition can also help to respond to campaign with their own initiatives. This can

be used to create strategies that sustain advantages in the competitors weakness improved

their own business performance.

The proponents asked permission to conduct an interview to the manager of which

respond to the proponents request and also allowed the team to see the production process

of making powder. It is also includes their machines/equipment used, their schedule of

operating hours, their facilities , supplies of the raw materials and their pricing and

promotional strategy used. Aside from gathering information, the proponents did the

observation to know what can be the other factors to make the business different from

competitors.

The table below shows the name of the direct and indirect competitors of the

business, their location and product offering.
