Key Teaching Points - Badminton

High singles serve

 Transfer body weight forward in
fluid motion whilst pushing
momentum into serve to
achieve a smooth technique.
 Follow through after shot in
desired shot direction for
increased accuracy
 Pronate front arm just before
shuttle contact and push
through the movement
 Have body slightly side-on in
preparation for serve.

Low serve forehand/backhand

 Place non-racquet foot forward with
body on slight side on to opposition
 Distribute body weight evenly between
legs
 Minimal follow through, more wrist
flexion for faster release
 Racquet starts behind the body and
moves through and past the side of the
body
 Contact shuttle slightly forward of body position

Flick serve forehand/backhand

 Trajectory; shuttle stays relatively low and
travels quickly across the net, falling toward
the back of the court
 Weight starts back and moves forward as
serve I completed
 Shortened forehand grip is used for increased
control
 Wrist ‘flicks’ quickly to give the serve power
and speed, accelerating toward the opponent
Return of low serve

 Stand behind service line in preparation of
low serve
 Racquet held high and in front of body,
ready to hit return
 Step forward onto racquet foot as shuttle
becomes close to gain momentum
 Start on toes for fast reaction time on
return

Forehand overhead drop shot

 Body slightly forward with racquet
hand forward
 Attempt to hit shuttle as high as
possible for this shot
 Follow through in direction of
intended shot
 Weight slightly more on back (non-
racquet) foot

Backhand overhead cross-court drop shot

 Weight on front, racquet foot
 Body facing toward the net, racquet arm
reaching across body
 Rotate body upon contact to hit across court
to opposing side
 Extend arm upon contact to generate power
and accuracy
Forehand smash
 Body on a 45-degree angle to side on upon
preparation
 Step forward and extend body to meet shuttle
 Follow through with high level of power to generate maximum force on
shot
 Trajectory; shuttle travels quickly downwards towards opposing court

Overhead clear
 Non-racquet arm pointing towards the shuttle as it approaches
 Weight on back foot with knees slightly bent
 Arm pronating upon contact with shuttle
 Step forward into shot, moving weight towards front foot

Forehand net attack shot

 Body square to the net in preparation
 Stepping forward in preparation to
generate increased power
 Shortened forehand grip to have maximum
control
 “snap” of wrist upon contact to force
shuttle into a downward trajectory

Underarm clear
 forehand/backhand

 Body square to net in preparation for shot
 Racquet held at side of body and come up
under shuttle upon contact
 Follow through in direction of shot for
accuracy
 Aim for the back of the opposing team’s
court
 Aim for type 2 trajectory on clearing shot

Drive forehand/backhand
 Body balanced between both feet
 Elbow out in-front at shoulder height
 Racquet parallel to floor prior to swing
 Transfer weight forward for maximum power
 Arm supinates, hitting the shuttle with a high degree of force
