Key Teaching Points

Overhead float serve

 Weight on back foot in preparation,
move forward to generate momentum
and make contact with serve moving
forward
 Opposite foot forward to serving arm,
stepping forward into shot and
extending arm toward the net
 Server stand just behind baseline with
body slightly side on to opposing
players
 The ball toss is less than a meter high
and contacted at its highest point of
the toss

Jump serve
 Ball is tossed above the head and the serving up is in line
 Wrist ‘snaps’ forward to gain top spin on the ball
 Ball spins over the net and top spin causes it to drop
quickly once over the net
 Arm follows through after contact in the direction of the
net
 Ball is contacted at high speed to gain speed toward
target

Combined jump-float serve

 Open hand is used for contacting the ball for
maximum accuracy
 Take off from two feet, much like a spike
 Hitting arm is flexed back behind the head in
preparation for contact with the volleyball
 Weight is transferred forward prior to contact to
gain momentum on the serving motion

Forearm pass
 Move to get the ball in line with body and facing the
target
 Body is balanced with balls of feet on ground and
the outside foot forward
 Contact with the ball is done by the forearm for
maximum control
 Arms follow through no higher than parallel to
court, movement does not come from elbows
Front set
 Body is balanced with knees and hips flexed
 Elbows on right angle with thumbs making a triangle towards
the ground
 Contact with the ball is made at less than 50cm above the
body for maximum control of the ball
 Ball is released in parabolic flight with as little spin as possible

Spike
 Spike approach starts behind the attack line
 Two-foot take-off for maximal control of
flight
 Landing occurs in the same place as take-off
 Ball avoids opposition blocks and tries to
find gaps on the opposing court

Block
 Fingers are spread as wide as possible in the air to maximise chance of stopping ball
 Knees are bent no more than 90 degrees in preparation for take-off
 Arms are kept straight and reaching up and over the net during blocking
 Two-foot landing is controlled and ready position is resumed immediately upon
landing
