RENEWABLE ENERGY SCENARIO OF PAKISTAN
Introduction:
Renewable energy is the energy that is produced from
such sources that do not deplete within a Human’s
lifetime and energy in our country is dependent upon gas
and oil rather than hydro, solar and wind.
Regarding the climate change in Pakistan, renewable
resources tops the list of saving the country of declining
the worst effects of rising temperatures since the
renewable resources don’t emit carbon dioxide and other
greenhouse gases that contribute to global warming.
Therefore, the most common examples of renewable
resources are summarized below:

Hydropower:
The Northern part of the country is rich in hydro power resources. Other than big (capacity
greater than 1MW) hydro power plants, there are large number of sites in the high terrain,
where natural waterfalls are abundantly available. In the micro scale, the recoverable potential
up to 100KW is roughly estimated to be 300MW on waterfalls in northern sites of Pakistan. In a
macro scale in Punjab, there have been located more than 300 sites which have nearly 350MW
power potential.

Solar energy:
Pakistan is ideally located to take advantage of solar energy technologies. The energy is widely
distributed and available in our country and development has been shown in both photovoltaic
(PV) and concentrating solar power (CSP) plants. A number of companies are trading
photovoltaic cells and appliances. They are also selling PV modules, batteries and regulators.
CSP use mirrors to concentrate the Sun’s heat, deriving thermal energy instead but in Pakistan,
mostly PV are enrolled and are widely used.

Wind energy:
In the world, wind power to produce the electricity on a commercial scale has become now the
fastest growing energy resource technology. Since Pakistan has tremendous wind potential but
the present facilities of generating the electricity from the wind in non-existing. Pakistan has a
1000km long coastline and thus can be utilized for installation of wind farms. Since Pakistan is a
late starter in this field, so the preliminary wind power potential studies and projects are not
even available.
