Course Description:
This course provides an introduction to the study of tourism, where tourism is examined from the perspective of a phenomenon, an industry and as a field of
study or research. As a phenomenon, the major factors that contribute to its development, growth and decline both in the world and in the Philippines are analyzed.
As an industry, the course looks at the various sectors that comprise the tourism system and how they interact with each other. As a field of research, major tourism
theories are introduced. Basic definitions and concepts relating to tourism’s political, environmental, economic and cultural impacts are also discussed.
Course Objectives:
At the end of the course, students are expected to:
Cognitive:
1. Analyze the philosophy and fundamental principles of tourism.
2. Determine the role of tourism industry in the overall impact on the development of a country.
3. Explain historical changes which have affected the growth and development of the hospitality industry.
Affective:
1. Appreciate the importance tourism.
2. Understand the role of different sectors that supports the tourism industry.
3. Acknowledge the role of the Department of Tourism in the overall improvement of the Philippines Tourism Industry.
4. Develop inevitable attitudes necessary for a tourism/hospitality practitioner in the future.
5. Value Filipino culture and origin of tourism in the Philippines as well as international perspective.
Psychomotor:
1. Recognize and apply how the tourism organizations are structured and operated.
2. Implements the principles, theories and concepts in all the aspects of tourism especially in protecting and rehabilitating site
attractions.
3. Preserve the rich cultural heritage of the country through continued practice of the Filipino cultures and traditions.
