Students will extend their knowledge of plot diagrams to a novel. Students will be able to identify the key events in the book that fall into the categories of rising action, climax, and falling action.
CA Standard:
5.ELA.3.2 Identify the main problem or conflict of the plot and explain how it is resolved.
Lesson Introduction (about 10 minutes):
I will introduce the lesson by recalling the lesson on plot diagrams from earlier in the trimester. I will call on students to remind me of the various parts of plot. Then we will discuss the novel we recently completed, Wonder. Students will share what they remembered from the novel and which events stood out to them. After our discussion, I will tell students that we will be completing a plot diagram for the novel Wonder using our plot diagram notes and prior experience with plot diagrams.
Lesson Body (about 25-30 minutes):
Teacher: Lead the class in determining the exposition for Wonder. Students: Find characters, setting, and the introduction and share answers with the class. Teacher: Instruct the class for partner work. “Work in partners to complete the remainder of the plot diagram. Be sure to use specific details from the parts of the novel that you categorize as the rising action, climax, falling action, and resolution. Partner Groups: Breanna and Naomi, Madison and Bianca, Trevor and Aidan, and Matteo and Solomon. Students: Work in groups and ask for help if needed. Teacher: Circulate classroom and assist students as needed.
Lesson Closure (about 10 minutes):
After the allotted time and most groups have completed the task, I will bring the students back together for a group discussion. Each partner group will share what they found for one aspect of the plot diagram (rising action, climax, falling action, and resolution). Students will ask questions and clarify their answers. Students may add or remove items from their plot diagram during the discussion.
Progress Monitoring:
Throughout the duration of the group work, I will circulate the room to assess student progress and assist students in meeting the lesson goal.
Summative Assessments:
Students will be informally assessed in their understanding of the novel and in plot diagrams. Students will also be assessed in their ability to listen and write what other students share.
Accommodations:
1. Groupings vary with both heterogenous and homogenous groups to support all students. 2. Students who require extra help and explanation are paired with a competent peer who will benefit by extending their understanding through teaching and leading. 3. During the class discussion, I will be writing the information under the document camera to ensure all students can follow along and remain successful. 4. I will ask leading questions when assisting groups with completing the plot diagram.
