Length of Longest Stream ………....….....….……….….…....…....L = 0.721 Km
Height difference between origination of Stream and Bridge site. H = 6.920 m
B - RATIONAL FORMULA

i) Runoff Coefficient (C)

The value of C depends on the nature of soil, soil cover
& location of catchment and may be taken as under.
Type of Catchment
Hilly soils / plateau & barren
for C = 0.498 (R x F)^0.2 Ref: - 2.1.1
Where
R = 50 year 24 hour point rainfall (cm)
F = Areal reduction factor depending upon catchment area & duration of rainfall

ii) Time of Concentration, tc = [L³ / H] 0.345

tc = 0.37 Hr. Ref: - 2.1.3
= 21.95 Min.
R50(24) = 280 mm Ref: - FIG -1.0
F = 0.720 Ref: - Table( for F)
Hence, C = 0.909 Ref: - 2.1.1 (Table)

iii) Intensity of Rainfall (I)

Ratio for tch = 0.210 Ref: - FIG -4
Ratio for 1h = 0.380 Ref: - FIG -4
R50(1) = 70 mm Ref: - FIG -3.3
Co.efficient K = tc h ratio / 1 h ratio =
K = 0.55
R50 (tc) = K x R50 (1) = 38.710 mm
I = R50 (tc) / tc = 105.823 mm/hr
iv) Design Flood Discharge(Q50)
Q50 = 0.278 x C x I x A
= 0.278 x 0.909 x 105.823 x 0.21
Q50 = 5.616 Cumecs

B) VELOCITY CALCULATION BY MANNINGS FORMULA

From Mannings formula, Velocity (V) = 1/η R2/3 S1/2

Parameters :- Rugosity coefficient η= 0.055

Wetted Area A= 3.26 Sq.m
Wetted Perimeter P= 7.79 m
Hydraulic Radius R=A/P= 0.418 m
Slope Calculation
At 25.17 m u/s, Bed Level = 335.59 m
At 62.35 m d/s, Bed Level = 334.35 m
SM CONSULTANTS, BHUBANESWAR 3
Slope = 0.014168
Hence, Velocity (V) = 1.211 m/s

C) DISCHARGE CALCULATION

Discharge = A x V
Q = 3.95 Cumecs

SM CONSULTANTS, BHUBANESWAR 4
WATERWAY CALCULATION
AS PER CODE OF PRACTICE FOR THE DESIGN OF SUB STRUCTURES
AND FOUNDATIONS OF BRIDGES

Adopted Design Flood Discharge = Maxm of (QRational method & Qarea-Velocity method)
So, Design Flood Discharge, Qdesign = 5.62 Cumecs

1) Design Water Way (Regime Width) [ Clause no 4.5 ]

Pw = 1.811 C √Q
Pw = Regime Width in metre
C = Coefficient = 2.67
Q = Design Discharge in Cumsec = 5.62

Pw = 1.811 x 2.67 x √5.62 = 11.5 m

At HFL Condition P = 7.602 m From Site

However, Considering Discharge, Flow Velocity and Embakment Height,

Length of the proposed bridge 1 x 6 =6 m
Type of bridge 1X6X3 RCC Box

2) Design Discharge For Foundation [ Clause no 4.4 ]

Qf = 1.3 x Q
Qf = 1.3 x 5.62 = 7.301 Cumecs

3) Calculation Of Afflux [ Clause no 4.7 ]

The afflux can be calculated by Molesworth Equation:

  A  
2
 V2
h    0.015     1
 17.88   a  

Where,
h = afflux generated in m
V = Velocity of unobstructed water in m/s
A = Cross Sectional Area of unobstructed channel in Sqm
a = Cross Sectional Area of constricted channel in Sqm
(calculated from the cross section of the river in the bridge site)
A = 3.26 sqm a = 5.01 sqm

Velocity of Flow V =(1/η x R⅔ x S½) As per Manning's Formula

Hydraulic Mean Depth, R=A/P = 0.42 wetted perimeter = 7.790 m

Rugosity coefficient = 0.055 Bed slope= 0.009605

V= 1.00 m/s

SM CONSULTANTS, BHUBANESWAR 4
h= 0.000 m
As h<0.15m, adopt h= 0.15 m

SM CONSULTANTS, BHUBANESWAR 5
4) Design H.F.L.
Design Discharge (Q) = 5.62 Cumecs
Velocity (V) = 1.211 m/s
Area Required (A = Q/V) = 4.63748968 Sq.m.
Water depth required = Area/Provided waterway = 0.77291495 m
Calculated HFL = BL+ Required Waterdepth = 336.848915 m
But, Observed HFL = = 336.911 m
Observed HFL + Afflux = 337.061 m
Hence,
Design HFL(Max. of CHFL & OHFL+Afflux) = 337.061 m

5) Scour Depth Calculation [ Clause no 4.6 ]

As Water way provided = Less than Lacey's regime width

Hence, Depth of Scour, D = 1.338*(qf²/f)⅓

Discharge intensity per m width qfb = Q/W = 0.936 Cumec

Lacey's silt factor f = 2.73

Normal Scour depth D = 1.000 m

In Moderate Bend
Maximum Depth of Scour 1.5 x D = 1.500 m For RCC BOX
Scour Level = 335.411 m
Scour below G.L. = 0.665 m
Depth of Rock strata from G.L. = 5.100 m
Rock Level = 330.976 m

6) Check for Fomation Level

i) RL of D.HFL should be less than or equal to RL of bottom of Top Slab

D. HFL = 337.061 m
Bed Level = 336.076 m
Box height = 3.000 m
Wearing Coat = 0.150 m
RL of B/O Top Slab = 338.926 m

SAFE, DHFL < RL of B/O Top Slab

ii) Provided Formation Level should be greater than or equal to RL of top of Top Slab

RL of B/O Top Slab = 338.926 m

Top Slab Thickness = 0.7 m
RL of T/O Top Slab = 339.626 m
Provided formation level = 343.447 m

SAFE, Provided FL > Min FL Reqd

iii) Freeboard from DHFL to Formation Level should be greater than 1m

SM CONSULTANTS, BHUBANESWAR 6
D. HFL = = 337.061 m
Provided Formation Level = 343.447 m
Freeboard = 6.386 m

SAFE, Freeboard >1m

Justification for span:

From the above calculation it is inferred that proposed span of 1 x 6 X 3m is satisfying all criteria of Vertical
Clearance, Freeboard Clearance, Formation Level and site requirements. Hence, the choice of span is justified.
