Problem Drill

1. The initial rates for the reaction of nitrogen monoxide and chlorine:
2 NO(g) + Cl2(g)  2 NOCl(g)
were measured with various concentrations of NO and Cl2. The following data
were collected:

Experiment Initial concentration (mol L-1) Initial Rate

[NO] [Cl2] (mol L-1s-1)
1 0.010 0.010 0.025
2 0.010 0.020 0.050
3 0.020 0.010 0.100
4 0.020 0.020 0.200

Based on these data, what is the rate equation? What is the value of the rate
constant k?

2. The initial rates for the reaction of hydrogen and nitrogen:

3 H2(g) + N2(g)  2 NH3(g)
were measured with various concentrations of H2 and N2. The following data
were collected:

Experiment Initial concentration (mol L-1) Initial Rate

[H2] [N2] (mol L-1s-1)
1 0.100 0.100 1.2 x 10-4
2 0.200 0.100 2.4 x 10-4
3 0.200 0.200 2.4 x 10-4
4 0.400 0.400 4.8 x 10-4

Based on these data, what is the rate equation? What is the value of the rate
constant k? What is the order of the reaction respect to the H2? What is the
order of the reaction with respect to N2?

3. The rate equation for the reaction of NO and O2 is:

2 NO(g) + O2(g)  2 NO2(g) Rate = k[O2][NO]2
(a) What is the order of the reaction with respect to NO? With respect to O2?
What is the overall order of reaction?
(b) Suppose that you double the concentration of NO and simultaneously
decrease the concentration of O2 by a factor of four. Will the reaction be
faster or slower under the new condition?

4. For the reaction of NO with O2

2 NO(g) + O2(g)  2 NO2(g)
The rate expression was given as rate = k[O2][NO]2,with the rate constant
determined to be k = 7.1 x 103 L2 mol-2 s-1.
(a) Calculate the initial rate of reaction if the concentration of NO and O2 are
0.025 mol L-1 and 0.050 mol L-1, respectively.
(b) If the concentration of NO is doubled and the concentration of O2 is halved,
what happens to the reaction rate?

5. Shown below is the chemical equation for the hydrolysis of ethyl acetate into
ethanol and acetic acid:
O O
+ H2 O H3 C OH + CH 3CH 2OH
H3 C OCH2 CH 3
ethyl acetate
And the following data were collected at 20oC:
Time (min) [Ethyl acetate] (mol L-1)
0 0.275
2 0.210
4 0.155
6 0.115
8 0.085
10 0.060
(a) Calculate the rate of change of ethyl acetate concentration during the period
from 2 min to 4 min
(b) Calculate the rate of change of ethyl acetate concentration during the period
from 8 min to 10 min
(c) Explain why the rate of change of ethyl acetate concentration during the
period from 8 min to 10 min is smaller than that during the period from 2
min to 4 min.
(d) Would the initial rate of reaction increase or decrease if the reaction is
conducted at 35oC.
