Tutorial Sheet 12 (Final): Week 15: 28th Oct 2019 to 1st
Nov 2019
Problems: Last Date of submission: 6th November 2019.
Instruction: Assume appropriate missing data if any.
1. A transformer coupled Class A large signal amplifier has maximum and minimum values
of collector-emitter voltage of 25 V and 2.5 V. Determine its collector efficiency.

2. A Class A transformer coupled amplifier uses 25:1 transformer to drive 4 ohms load.
Calculate the effective load (seen by the transformer connected to the large turns side of
the transformer.)

3. A transformer couple class A power amplifier draws a current of 200mA from a collector
supply of 10 V, when no signal is applied to it. Determine (i) Maximum output power, (ii)
maximum collector efficiency and (iii) power rating of the transformer. If the load across
the transformer secondary is of 2 ohms and transformer turns ratio is 5:1, comment on
the impedance matching.

4. A power transistor is to be used as a Class A transformer coupled amplifier and is to

deliver a maximum of 5W to a 4 ohms load. Operating point is adjusted for symmetrical
clipping with collector supply voltage of 20 V. Assume ideal characteristics with Vmin
=0V. Calculate: (i) Transformer turns ratio (ii)Peak collector current (iii)Operating point
values (iv) Power dissipation rating and (v) Collector circuit efficiency.

5. A Class B push pull amplifier must deliver 20W of audio power to the output load. (i0 if
the output transformer is 82.7 % efficient, what is the minimum power drain on the power
supply under optimum conditions and (iii) what is the minimum average dissipation rating
required for each transistor?

6. Design a Push pull amplifier to deliver 250mW to a load of 6 ohms. Assume transformer
efficiency to be 80% and Vcc=12V.
