1 PURPOSE
The purpose of this document is to describe the cable gland, cable and wiring
installation and required tools, drawing, materials in Installation Project. This procedure
shall be applied during wiring work.
2 SCOPE OF WORK
The scope of work shall be covered all installation of cable gland and wiring on
Installation Project.
3 INSTALLATION PROCEDURE
3.5.2 Using the cable gauge and sizer supplied with the Terminator, measure the exposed cable
armor or tray cable outside diameter and select the appropriate cable fitting. Place the
bottom of the gauge on the exposed cable armor or sheath and hold the gauge with your
thumb. Wrap gauge tightly. The arrows at the bottom of the gauge indicate which catalog
number will be required to terminate the cable. In the example shown below a TMC165
and TMCX3112 would be used.
Note:
If a cable gauge and size is not available, determine the O.D. of the cable armor or cable
sheath and chose the appropriate fitting using Table 1.
3.5.3 For Type MC cables: Refer to Table 2 or the steps on the cable gauge and sizer to determine
the proper amount of armor to be exposed for assembly. Remove additional jacket if
necessary. Inspect the armor and use a file to remove any burrs.
Note:
Refer to the line drawing on the back page for identification of TMCX cable fittings
components.
3.5.4 Prepare Cable. Insert cold shrink to cable, and remove all fillers and shielding back to
armor. Disassemble body and armor stop / sealing chamber from fitting.. Install body
into the enclosure and tighten with wrench. Slide gland nut and intermediate body
assembly onto cable as shown below. Separate un-insulated ground conductors back to
armor or sheath to allow sealing of individual strands.
3.5.5 Type MC Cable: In order to accommodate the variation of cable manufacturing processes,
and the cable armor O.D. range of the fitting, a non-metallic armor stop reducer is
installed in the armor stop/sealing chamber. If the conductors do not pass through the
armor stop reducer, remove the reducer. Make certain that the cable armor is stopped by
the armor stop / sealing chamber insert or armor stop reducer.
3.5.6 Separate conductors and individual strands of ground conductor. Wooden wedges are
recommended to hold large conductors apart for compound packing. Mix 2-part epoxy
sealing compound provided by kneading and folding until a uniform color is obtained
(approximately 2-3 minutes). Refer to Table 3. More compound than is needed for the
installation is provided. Use only as much as is needed.
Note:
Gloves are not required for installation of sealing compound. However, for those with
sensitive skin or for prolonged exposure it is recommended that gloves are worn. Pack a
sufficient amount of compound between inside diameter of armor sheath and conductor
filler bundle. See Table 3.
Use a hardwood stick or dowel to pack compound in areas not readily accessible to
fingers and particularly in the center most areas of the cable. To prevent damage to
conductors during packing of the compound, do not use metal tools. Seal end of fillers,
and any resulting voids with a layer of compound 1/2” minimum thickness.
Note:
When preparing the seal in cold temperatures, mix sealing compound one tube at
a time.
Working life of compound is approximately 30 minutes at 68ºF. Working life
decreases at elevated temperatures. In cold weather, warm components and
sealing compound until ready for use by storing in the cab of a truck or inside a
pocket. Fitting may be assembled at temperatures as low as 40ºF/4ºC. Allow
assembly to set at 40ºF/4ºC for 24 hours.
3.5.7 Tightly wrap the ends of the conductors together and slide conductors through armor stop /
sealing chamber.
Note:
Duct tape or similar material is helpful when wrapping Conductors.
Slide the armor stop / sealing chamber over the epoxy
Compound and back against the armor or sheath, squeezing
Compound into leads and back over armor or sheath.
3.5.8 Remove excess compound from the large end of the armor stop / sealing chamber to expose
the insert taper. This surface must remain clean for the spring to seat properly and
provide grounding continuity and pullout strength. After removing excess compound, fill
in any voids with additional compound.
3.5.9 Pack compound between and around conductors at the small end of the armor stop / sealing
chamber to fill any voids. Chamber should remain flush with the end of the armor stop /
sealing chamber.
3.5.9.1 Insert the cable and armor stop / sealing chamber assembly into body.
With armor stop / sealing chamber fully inserted into body, slide intermediate body with
gland nut over the armor stop / sealing chamber and thread onto body. Completely
tighten Intermediate body with wrench. Tighten gland nut on intermediate body to
compress bushing for a weather tight seal. Refer to Table 4 for torque requirements.
3.5.9.2 When using Type MC cable, verify continuity between cable armor and enclosure.
3.5.9.3 Gland Installation is complete. Slide the cold shrink to cover all the gland body
3.5.9.4 Cold shrink installation procedure
The Cold Shrink is made out of durable EPDM rubber and slips over the fitting.
Specific type are detailed in table below.
There is a plastic core that pulls out and the Cold Shrink material shrinks over the
fitting, forming an impervious seal around the fitting. No heat is required to shrink the
material.
Before pulling out the cold shrink material, ensure cable number is correct as per cable
schedule and cable gland is already firmly fitted.
3.6 WIRING
When installation of cable gland completed, wiring can be performed. Engineering
drawing : related Loop diagram as reference for wiring purpose.
In this case there are few location of wiring activities.
Field detector
Fire & Gas Panel (F&G Panel)
Junction Box
Fire Man Panel (FMP)
Fire Panel
MCB Breaker Hazardous Area
Pressure Transmitter
Battery Charger
There are no special precautions to be taken, only avoid cutting the conductors
insulation with the cutting tool used to strip the outside sheath.
Arrange conductors properly in strands maintaining them with plastic tie wrap made for
that purpose in panel connection.
3.7 CHECKING
After all of wiring have been done, an internal check shall be performed. Group leader
and team shall concern for this activities to avoid punch list work.
Ensure that cable marker have been installed
Ensure that gland installation have been properly tight and conform with procedure
Ensure wire marker available and correct refer to loop diagram
Ensure crimping of cable lug have been properly tight
Ensure that connection to terminal block have been properly tight
If the installations have been correct, inspection can be performed by QC inspector. If
installations still not reach the objectives please do repair.
