Energy efficiency is increasingly turning into a determin-
ing factor in international competition. However, for com-
panies to improve their energy performance, they must be
aware of their energy use and consumption. To establish
a process of continuous improvement in energy efficiency,
companies either need to implement an energy manage-
ment system in accordance with the ISO 50001 standard
or carry out energy audits at regular intervals in accord-
ance with the EN 16247 respectively ISO 50002 standard.
The EN 16247 standard is a European standard. Part 1 covers
the general requirements common to all energy audits,
while parts 2 to 4 address specific requirements dedicat-
ed to energy audits for buildings, industrial processes and
transportation. The international standard ISO 50002 de-
scribe the requirements of energy audits with guidance
for use. Between both standards exist minor differences
regarding the requirements only. The standards can be
used worldwide as a basis for energy audits to improve
energy efficiency in all companies. Optionally, the auditor
and the company can agree on extending the scope and

depth of the audit into energy-efficiency consultancy.
