Part 1: Tutorial. Read the material and answer the quiz questions.

If the
substitute chooses, they may show the video links to the whole class (you may need
to show them how). If not, you’ll need earphones to hear the videos. If you or your
neighbor doesn’t have any, please share.
Conflict can be internal or external, meaning that a person could cause their own conflict or
someone/something outside of them could cause it.
Internal conflict is called Character vs. Self
External conflict is called one of several things:

Character vs (other) Character Character vs Society Character vs Nature

Character vs Technology Character vs Supernatural

A story can have multiple conflicts of varying types.

Consider Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. Harry Potter needed (among other things)
to solve the problem of the chamber of secrets (man vs supernatural) but he also had the ever-
looming threat of Voldemort (man vs man).
Look at these video clips and see what type of conflict you think is being portrayed:

Part 2: Reading a short story
Now, let’s read a story and try to figure it out on our own. A PDF of the story can be
found in the assignment on Canvas. When you answer the questions, please use a
different font or different color than black so that I can more easily grade your work.

“Marionettes, Inc” by Ray Bradbury (1949)

1. What is a marionette? (Look it up.) a puppet worked from above by strings attached to its
limbs.
2. What are Braling’s and Smith’s complaints about their wives?
● Braling Was forced into a marriage he didn’t want to be in, was threatened.
● Smith His wife is clingy and doesn’t leave him alone.
3. The men’s conflicts with their individual wives would be labeled as character vs. Character. (explain
your answer) individual conflicts between a character and a character.
4. Who or what is Braling Two? Describe it. A machine made to look exactly like braling.
5. What does Braling Two want? He wants Braling’s wife.
6. What kind of conflict does Braling Two present? Character (Braling) vs Technology. (explain your
answer) Braling Two is a machine creating a conflict for Braling.
7. What is Braling’s ticket for? What is he planning on doing? He is going to Rio.
8. What does Smith notice when he looks at his bankbook at home later? Ten thousand dollars were
missing.
9. What does Smith realize about his wife? She was a marionette.
10. The thing about conflicts is that once you figure out what they are, you can predict the ending will go
one or two ways. (Harry Potter will kill or be killed by Voldemort; the couple will fall in love or
break up.) What can you predict at this point? The marionettes will betray their owners.
11. What is Braling Two’s reaction when Braling tries to take him back down to the basement? He hates
the idea and resists it.
12. What does Braling Two admit to Braling? That he loves Braling’s wife.
13. Do you think that Braling or Braling Two returns to bed with Mrs. Braling that night? Can you
support that answer? I think it was Braling Two, a man has no chance of beating a machine, and
based on how the initial conflict happened, Braling is locked in the box in the cellar.
