SINTESIS

A. MGA SANGGUNIAN

“The term "fine art" refers to an art form practised mainly for its aesthetic value and its beauty
("art for art's sake") rather than its functional value. Fine art is rooted in drawing and design-based
works such as painting, printmaking, and sculpture. It is often contrasted with "applied art" and
"crafts" which are both traditionally seen as utilitarian activities. Other non-design-based activities
regarded as fine arts, include photography and architecture, although the latter is best understood
as an applied art.

The area of fine art is constantly being extended to embrace new activities arising because of
either new technology, or artistic invention. The former is exemplified by acrylic painting, as well
as silkscreen printing and giclee prints; the latter by the invention of mixed-media artworks
employing collage, decollage, photomontage, or "found-art". Because of this gradual widening
process, it is almost impossible to define or fix a meaning for fine art.

Until the English Arts & Crafts Movement of the late 19th century, there was a rigid distinction
between fine art (purely aesthetic) and decorative art (functional). During the 20th century, with
the introduction of the category of visual art, this arbitrary distinction has become blurred, and
certain crafts or decorative arts (notably ceramics) are now considered to be fine art.

Definitions of fine art are obliged to change with the time, but most encompass the following
activities:

Painting
Drawing
 encaustic painting
 charcoal
 chalk  tempera painting
 pastel  ink and wash
 pencil
 pen and ink  oil painting
 book illustration  watercolour painting
 caricature
 gouache
 acrylics
Sculpture Printmaking

 bronze  woodcuts
 stone  engraving
 wood-carving  etching
 lithography
 silkscreen-printing

Other Fine Arts

 Photography
 Architecture
 Manuscript Illumination
 Calligraphy
 Animation”

“The fine art market is booming: Seems like every day, another auction record is set for "the
highest price ever paid [fill in artist's name here]." So what does that mean for the painting you
bought to match your sofa a few years back? It may increase in worth, or it may be as salable as
your kid's pasta-filled craft project.

So how do you tell? Well, as with any investment, you need to do your research and go beyond
your comfort zone. The art market is fickle, and there are no guarantees of profitability, but with a
little legwork and forethought, you can fill your home with images that may prove worthy assets
down the line. Consider these tips for choosing fine art and identifying the Michelangelo from the
macaroni.

You walk into a gallery and fall in love with a $5,000 painting, but you can't justify the price tag.
The gallery owner shows you a selection of the same artist's work for a humble $500, explaining
that the pieces are giclées. A giclée is a machine-made print, a reproduction printed on fine paper
or canvas with color and clarity that can rival the original. But it's still a copy.

The rarity of a work of art is what gives it value, so an original will always be worth more than a
reproduction. While a giclée may come labeled with superlatives like "museum quality" or
"archival" and the seller may hawk a certificate of authenticity, it will never be as valuable as an
original. Some artists and appraisers even view giclées as a gimmick for novice artists and
neophyte collectors.

Still, there's no denying that a giclée puts fine art within reach for many art enthusiasts, and while
a certificate doesn't lend much value to the reproduction, a fresh signature and especially a
remarque (an original drawing made by the artist in the margin of the giclée) could bump up future
value.

You may hear stories of giclées being proudly exhibited at such noble institutions as the British
Museum and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, but the pieces held in these collections are limited
edition Iris prints of digital images or digital manipulations – such as "Nest and Trees" by Kiki
Smith at the Met. They are not reproductions of original paintings. Museums do, however, sell
giclée versions of masterpieces to generate income. These giclées, though pleasing to your eye
and soul, won't pull in any future income for you.”

“The fine arts reflect a human need to understand our world. The fine arts are used to
express and communicate experiences, thoughts and feelings and to design objects and events
which meet personal and social needs. In this course students will reflect on and respond to
these aspects of the function of the fine arts. For each of the above curriculum organizers,
Creating/Performing/Communicating, and Perceiving/Responding/Reflecting are represented as
categories under which the prescribed learning outcomes are listed.

Creating/Performing/Communicating, and Perceiving/Responding/Reflecting describe

ways in which we experience and learn about the fine arts. These ways of experiencing the fine
arts are considered to be of equal importance and essential to this course curriculum.

Creating/Performing/Communicating Fine arts involve creating, performing, and

communicating through images, sound, movement, and language. Creating is a personally or
culturally meaningful act involving images, sounds, movement and/ or language. Communication
through the fine arts disciplines is a powerful means of expressing ideas and emotions to satisfy
a range of personal and social needs. Presenting and sharing is an important part of
communication.

Perceiving/Responding/Reflecting Fine arts involve perceiving, reflecting on and

responding to images, sound, movement, and language. Perceiving involves exploring the world
through the senses. Reflecting on, and responding to, involves observing, listening, describing,
analysing, interpreting, and evaluating the arts. Perceiving, responding to, and reflecting on are
personal and social activities which develop sensory awareness and aesthetic appreciation. An
informed and sensitive response takes into account the contexts of the artist, the student as artist,
and audience and may involve self-evaluation. Creating/Performing/Communicating and

Perceiving/Responding/Reflecting are interrelated processes for experiencing the fine

arts. By engaging in both, students become more aware of the artistic process and experience
their own creative potential.”

B. SINTESIS
