Chapter I
INTRODUCTION

Tardiness has already became a habit for many students around the

world. In fact, most of them are just few meters away from school. From the

meaning it self, coming late, has brought a serious problem that affects their

academic learning as well as in their performance. If a student is not on time

coming to school they would have a hard time during classroom discussions

even passing their output after deadline is also an example.

According to Oxford Advance Learners’ Dictionary 5 th ed., 1995, lateness

can be defined as the situation where an individual arrives after the proper,

scheduled or usual time. It is tantamount to “tardiness” which is defined to be

slow to act or respond.

There are a lot of factors or causes attributed to it. One of the common

examples are going to bed and waking up the late next morning. Consequently,

the student may forget that he/she need to be in school the next day. Parent’s

untimely task and commands can also be considered as reasons that students

come to school late. Due to lack of firm and consistent set of policy when it

comes to punctuality, students are encouraged to come late at school since there

are no consequences attached to being tardy or late.

The National Education for Statistics indicates that student tardiness

occurs at a rate of 3.3% to 9.5% each day for all students in kindergarten through

grade 12. According to the study of Farrar (2010), some of the implication are

academic failure, high school drop-outs, emotional and drug dependency even

fighting and bullying. Not only have the students who arrive late lose their
valuable educational instruction but also they disrupt the educational

environment and distract others who are in class. As a result, tardy behaviors

often result to serious emotional and social problems if not addressed or

intervened.

Furthermore, the researcher became interested about the topic to

determine the effects of tardiness in the academic performance of the students.

Also, she perceive that this issue needs to be addressed and resolve.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

The general objective of the study is to evaluate the effects of tardiness in

academic performance of selected Grade 10 students in Lucena Dalahican

National High School.

Specifically, it sought to answer the following questions:

1. What is the demographic profile of the respondents as to:

a. Age

b. Sex

c. Distance in Kilometers (km) between residence and school

d. Hours allotted in sleeping

2. What are the factors for student tardiness?

3. What are the effects of tardiness to the academic performance?

OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY

1. To determine the factors for student tardiness

2. To reveal the effects of tardiness to the academic performance

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

The study will be significant to the following:

1. For the student, for them to be conscious to the negative impacts of

tardiness so that next they will think twice they have an idea of the

consequences of being tardy.

2. For the parents, for them to be enlightened about these issue and set

some norms or policy about these.

3. For the teachers, for them to be aware on those students who are always

coming late or not on time in school and they can advise their students on

what are they going to do to avoid being tardy in school.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

This chapter presents the related literature and studies after the thorough

and in-depth search done by the researcher.

RELATED LITERATURE

Tardiness

Generally, class tardiness is defined as students not attending lecture on

time and not being present in the time set.

According to Saba (2015), after attending lectures for a period of time,

students start to know the lectures conducted and therefore assume that there

will be no constructive activities happen for the first few minutes of the lecture.

Class tardiness influences the students themselves as well as others. As

generally known, students who possess regular attendance tend to achieve

better results as success is related to one’s punctuality. Students who are late to

class will also cause disruption to other students.

The term “class tardiness” has been derived as students not attending

class on time, missing out initial time from the period and primarily not being

present in the time set (Nakpodia&Daflaghor, 2011). One of the major causes of

lateness is going to bed late because it could result in waking up late and

insufficient rest for the lesson on the next day.

Factors for Student’s Tardiness

According to Bataineh (2014), there are several factors affecting students

tardiness; poor organization, going late to bed, family background, cultural

background, school factors, illnesses, there is no consequences being late,

fatigue, emotional challenges and challenge to instructor’s authority.

Poor organization is the most common reason for lateness, Students wait

until the last minute, and then do not allow themselves enough time to travel. The

individual involved in watching films and home videos may till at night, this could

result in waking up late, and could be deduced from the literal meaning of saying

“early to bed, early to rise”

The habit of lateness could be learned from family members. For instance,

the person who sees the father always going late to work could also either learn

the habit, thus go the lecture late also.

Different culture have different standards concerning lateness. However,

punctuality is not really serious matter in some cultures, compared to how

punctuality is being perceived in western cultures and developed countries.

College factors include issues such as class size, and attitudes of

lecturers, other students, and administrators and inflexible in meeting the diverse

cultural learning styles of the student.

In general, students have poorly taking care of their health and may

exposed to variety source of mental illnesses. For instance, depression and

schizophrenia.
The consequences associated with a behavioral help in determine

whether or not that behavior will be repeated. If the consequences are negative,

the behavior is likely to reoccur. This applies to coming late to class. If instructors

neglect to react to or penalize lateness, or do so inconsistently, the behavior is

likely to be continued.

It is common to students to experience different kind of academic stressor.

As time pressure increase, students may be working multiple jobs or night shifts

in addition to studying. For some, “pulling an all-nighter” is almost a rite of

passage, with attendant potential loss of alertness and interpersonal sensitivity.

Several psychological and emotional conditions can undermine students’

motivation to get class on time. Indeed, a hallmark symptom of conditions such

as depression includes a decreased motivation and may disrupt sleep patterns,

which may indirectly affect students’ ability to get to class in a timely manner.

In some cases, students come to class late to test the instructor or

challenge his or her authority. For example, if the instructor or timid or does not

seem in command of the class or the material. Some students may also seek to

challenge the authority of particular categories of instructors who are young,

female, minority or non-English speaker.

RELATED STUDIES

Factors Affecting Tardiness among Students

Marwan Bataineh (2014) conducted a study entitled “A review of Factors

Associated with Lateness Behavior and Dealing Strategies” which aimed to

systematically reviewed studies that investigate factors associated with students’

behavior and dealing strategies. There were at least 24 papers reviewed

regarding lateness behavior.

The findings revealed that lateness among students has negative

reflection to affecting other students. However, late students coming to class

distract the rest of the students and disrupts the flow of the instructor’s

discussion. Eventually, lateness has both intellectual and social costs. Where it,

interrupts instructor and affect the learning process.

RESEACH METHODOLOGY

This chapter presents the discussion on the research methodology of the

study. This comprises research locale, research design, population sampling,

and statistical treatment that will be used for accurate data analysis and

interpretation.

RESEARCH LOCALE

The study will be conducted in Lucena Dalahican National High School.

Respondents will be determined accordingly using the statistical treatment that

will be used. The researcher chose the place of implementation because it will

give the researcher the needed information needed for the study. The study will

be conducted in the school year 2018-2019.

RESEARCH DESIGN

The researcher will be using correlation method to determine the tardiness

in relation to academic performance of Grade 10 students in Lucena Dalahican

National High School.

The primary sources are the Grade 10 students of Lucena Dalahican

National High School.

POPULATION SAMPLING
The researcher will use random sampling technique. Random sampling

technique is conveniently selecting the sample fitted to the description of the

desired respondents.

STATISTICAL TREATMENT

Data that will be gathered will be manipulated using the following

mathematical procedure.

To determine the number of samples, the researcher will be using

Slovin’s Formula.

𝑵

Where:

n= number of samples

N= population size

e= margin of error

Vn = total number of respondents

The weighted mean will be used to reveal the relation of tardiness to the

academic performance among the selected students of Lucena Dalahican

National High School.
