Introduction

This plan shows a specific series of activities to upgrade the Standard Operating Environment
(SOE) from windows 7 to windows 10 in all the computer labs at EN building at Swinburne
University of Technology. The plan has to be rigidly adhered to assure studies' minimal disruption
throughout the upgrade phase.

Instructions

To completely upgrade the labs, each shared computer lab which located in BA and EN buildings
must be upgraded at a number of phases to be sure that some of the computers are regularly
available to be used. Staff and students must be informed before two to three days of the
scheduled upgrading time, and for the labs, they should be remaining locked during the upgrades.
These instructions should be followed to be ensured that the upgrade process can be
continuously seamlessly with no any interruptions.

Prerequisites

Before the upgrade process's commencement, the administrator for the systems must be ensured
about the following:

- Be sure that each computer is connected to the network.

- Be sure that each computer which scheduled for the upgrade is switched on.

Following the previous prerequisites is guided because of the need for ensuring that the upgrade
to Windows 10 from Windows 8 Operating System (OS) occurs simultaneously.

In-Place Upgrade

For this phase, an In-place upgrade will be used. Several kinds of considerations guide the use
of this approach. The first factor is that In-place upgrade will be automatically preserved by all
settings, applications, data and drivers from the current installed Windows 7 OS (Microsoft
Corporation 2017c). This indicates that there will be no need to install all these when the upgrade

3
is completed. Thus, this will assist to reduce the overall amount of time required for the upgrade
of the OS (Microsoft Corporation 2017b).

The second factor for using this process is the reliability. In-place upgrade is exceptionally stable
including the ability to roll-back if any difficulties are encountered throughout the upgrading
process (Microsoft Corporation 2017a).

Upgrade Steps

The Upgrade stages include some steps as follows:

- Create a windows domain if it does not exist and to be ensured that each computer is
joined to the domain. However, if the domain does exist, Therefore, then this would
considerably facilitate the process of the OS installation. This stage is exceptionally
indispensable for the reason that it will guarantee that each computer which connected to
the domain is upgraded simultaneously and hence significantly decreasing the time
amount which required for completing the upgrade.

- Windows Server 2012 and the Domain Controller computers have to be named
appropriately. For example, the Windows Server can be identified as "WS001", and the
Domain Controller can be identified as "DC001". The administrator of the systems must
be assured that the server is adequately patched and has the latest security update. Also,
it should be added to the created domain. Furthermore, the domain can be given an
identifier like "Swinburne.com".

- Whenever the previous setup has been completed and ready for utilising, Microsoft
Deployment Toolkit (MDT) production deployment share creation is required, and the
reason for this creation is to increase the support for Windows 10 deployment and
consequently to make the whole upgrade process exceedingly easy.

- For establishing the MDT deployment share, the process is very straightforward and
requires the followed steps (Microsoft Corporation 2017c):

o The administrator of the systems has to log in the Windows Server which has the
identifier "WS001", after that logging in the previously created domain using their
password.

o The administrator has to right-click on "deployment shares" and click on "New

Deployment share".

o On the textbox which labelled "Deployment share path", type this next directory
"E:\\MDTProduction". This can be controlled on the page which called "Path Page".
When this is completed click on "Next".
4
o Type "MDTProduction$" in the textbox that labelled "Share name found on Share"
page. When this is completed, click on "Next".

o Type "MDT Production" in the textbox for description that labelled "Deployment
Share". This can be found on the "descriptive name" page.

o Whenever all steps have been done, accept the default settings which are on
"Options" page, and after that click on "Next" two times, then click on "Finish".

Addition of Windows 10 operating system

The assumption addressed in this part is that Windows 10 OS has now been copied to the path
"E:\Downloads/" on Windows 10 folder. When this is finished, the next steps are as follows:

- The initial phase is the "Deployment Shares node"s expansion of using deployment
workbench. This must be done besides the "MDT Production"s expansion.

- Create a folder named as "windows10OS" via right-click on the "Operating Systems" node.

- Now right-click on the recently created folder "windows10OS" and after that select the
option which labelled "Import Operating System". Provide the settings demanded.

- Once the OS has been added, you can go now to the folder labelled "Operating
systems/windows10OS". Click on "Operating System" node, then double click the
operating system’s name which you have just added, and change its name to
"windows10OSdefautImage".

Creation of task sequence for upgrade to Windows 10 from Windows 7

The steps that you required to follow are below:

- Use deployment workbench and choose "Task sequence". This can be found in the "MDT
production" node. Create a folder and name it "windows10OS".

- After that right-click on the recently created "windows10OS" folder, choose "New Task
Sequence".

5
- A pop up labelled "new sequence wizard" will be shown. Then give/enter all the requested
details.

- In the "sequence name" textbox, input "Windows10OSRTM upgrade".

- In the "select OS" textbox, input "windows10OS RTM default image".

Performing the Upgrade

When the new sequence is set, after that you need to take out the first upgrades on each
computer. Which are the computers that run by Windows 7. The stages included at this phase
are as follows:

- This command "\\WS001MDTProduction2\scripts\Litetouch.vbs" must be run on the

computers that have windows 7 enduring the upgrade. So, this step starts the deployment
wizard of MDT. It is necessary to be regarded that each computer can be accessed from
the domain. Therefore, running the commands from the server can be done without
needing for manual visit every computer.

- After the above step choose "Windows10OSRTM upgrade sequence" which you already
have been created at a previous phase. After that click on "Next".

- On "credentials" tab, define your account name, password and the domain.

- When the specifications creation is finished, on "Ready" tab click on "Begin". Then the
task sequence will be commenced. It is necessary to be noted that the task sequence
commences automatically and immediately begins the in-place upgrade process. Hence
this can be done by requesting the setup program for Windows and performs an
automated upgrade. It is essential to be remarked that this sort of upgrade stores drivers’
settings, data and applications from the last installation of Windows 7.

Important to note: The entire installation is performed at several times for each different
computer lab. Consequently, each computer lab located in BA and EN buildings must be
scheduled to be upgraded at various dates to avoid the risk of disruptions.
