Adjective
Adjective is a word which adds something to the meaning of a noun or a pronoun.

Use of Adjective
 Attributive Adjective
 Predicative Adjective

Attributive Adjective

When an adjective is used before a noun in a sentence it is called attributive adjective.

Example: He is a good boy.

Predicative Adjective

When an adjective is used after the noun it is called predicative adjective

Example: Aslam is intelligent.

Kinds of Adjective
1. Adjective of Quality or Descriptive Adjective
2. Adjective of Quantity / Quantitative Adjective
3. Adjective of Number / Numeral Adjective
4. Demomnstrative Adjective
5. Interrogative Adjective

1. Adjective of Quality / Qualitative Adjective

An adjective that deals with the quality of a noun or pronoun it is called adjective of quality.

Example: Good, Bad, Beautiful, Intelligent, Black, Short, Expensive, etc

Proper Adjectives are generally classed with Adjective of Quality

Proper Adjective is derived from proper noun.

Example: French Perfume, American Airport, Pakistani Rupee, etc

2. Quantitative Adjective

An adjective that expresses the quantity of a noun or pronoun it is called adjective of quantity.

Example: Some, Any, Much, Whole, Little, etc

3. Numeral Adjective

An Adjective that shows the number of a noun or a pronoun it is called adjective of number.

Example: One, two, three, four, ... , next, last, first, second, third,..., Few, All, Most etc

Adjectives of number answer the question: How many?

Adjectives of Number are of three kinds:

i. Definite Numeral Adjectives


Which denote an exact number; as,
One, two, three, etc These are called Cardinals
First, second, third, etc These are called Ordinals
ii. Indefinite Numeral Adjectives
Which do not denote an exact number; as,
All, no, many, few, some, any
iii. Distributive Numeral Adjectives
Which refer to each one of a number; as,
Each boy must take his turn.

The same Adjective may be classed as of Quantity or Number
Adjectives of Quantity Adjectives of Number
I ate some rice. Some boys are clever
He has lost all his wealth All men must die.
I have enough sugar There are not enough spoons

4. Demonstrative Adjective

When this, that, these, those used before the noun it is called demonstrative adjective.

Example: This scene is very beautiful.

5. Interrogative Adjective

When “Wh” word is used before the noun it is called Interrogative Adjective.

Example: Whose book is this?

Word Order
We order adjectives according to their meaning. This is the normal order:

1 Opinion (How good?) Wonderful, nice, great, awful, terrible
2 Size (How big?) Large, small, long, short, tall
3 Most other qualities Quiet, famous, important, soft, wet, angry
4 Age (How old?) New, old
5 Colour Red, blue, green, black
6 Origin (Where from?) American, British, French
7 Material (Made of?) Stone, plastic, wooden, steel
8 Type (What kind?) Electric kettle, road transport
9 Purpose (What for?) Quiz questions, face cream, bread knife

Here are some examples:

1. a small green insect (size, color)


2. Japanese industrial designers (origin, type)
3. a wonderful new face cream (opinion, age, purpose)
