Dear _____________,

I am thrilled about the opportunity to meet you, the staff at Sunnyside School, and most importantly the
Grade 2 classroom. Since teaching presents its set of challenges that can be especially difficult to navigate
for new teachers, it is my goal to learn as much as possible during our time together. In return, I will give
my best efforts to reach both you and students, and hopefully teach something new and exciting to
everyone involved.

Before enrolling in the teaching program, I enrolled at the University of Calgary where I attained a
Bachelor of Science in geophysics. During that time, I developed my skills in math, physics, and geology. I
also really enjoy history, so much so that I nearly minored. However, the lessons I cherish the most from
my time in university are those that taught me about myself. Accountability, confidence in one’s abilities,
and seeking continued self-development are some of the most valuable lessons that I took from my time
as an undergrad. I have nobody to thank but the teachers and my parents for teaching me these values.
Year after year, their continued support and willingness to push my limits made my university experience
an unforgettable one. I am enthusiastic about continuing my personal growth during our time together
and wish that I am able to have a positive impact on each person I meet at Sunnyside School.

In the past two years I have tutored high school and university students in math and physics. Because of
the trust they place in me, their performance and confidence in the subjects often reflect my guidance.
On a given session, I try to recognize behavioural patterns, gauge their understanding, and instill habits to
ensure their success without my presence. Aside from helping with the subjects, I also enjoy giving advice
and encouragement to students who are thinking of university, as I understand how it can be an exciting
yet anxious time for both students and parents alike. Overall, students have expressed gratitude towards
my advice, open communication, and knowledge of the topics. During my time as a tutor, I came to realize
how much I enjoy teaching topics, giving encouragement, and observing people’s slow and steady
development. Ironically, it was my students who taught me something new about myself, and that is that
I wanted to be a teacher. Just like how my students taught me a lot in our short time together, I am certain
that the Grade 2 students will teach me new lessons that I could not foresee.

In my personal time I pursue an active outdoor lifestyle filled with camping, rock climbing, and
backcountry backpacking trips. Both rock climbing and backpacking have taught me the values of safety,
communication, planning, and self-reliance. Most importantly, these activities have taught me ways to
manage stress in life, making them great pursuits for self-development outside the classroom.

However, there are many skills which I have yet to develop. Classroom management, lesson planning,
public speaking, and picking up on important subtleties are some skills which come to mind. I am nothing
but keen to see these challenges, learn how you tackle them, and apply them myself in the classroom.

Sincerely,

Fernando Baez
