1. Find the domain and range of each of the following functions:

(a) σ(u, v) = ā + up̄ + vq̄, where p, q are unit orthogonal vectors in R3 .
(b) σ(u, v) = (cos u cos v, cos u sin v, sin u)
(c) σ(u, v) = (sinh u cosh v, sinh u cosh v, sinh u)
(d) σ(u, v) = (u − v, u + v, u2 + v 2 )
(e) σ(u, v) = (cosh u, sinh u, v)
(f) σ(u, v) = (u, v, u2 + v 2 )
(g) σ(u, v) = (u cos v, u sin v, u)
(h) σ(u, v) = (sechu cos v, sechu sin v, tanh u).

2. Let U = (u, v)|0 < u2 + v 2 < π 2 , r = u2 + v 2 . Define σ : U → R3 by

u v π
σ(u, v) = , , tan r − .
r r 2
Find image of σ.
3. In the first two questions, find
(a) σu , σu , σuu , σuv , σvu , σvv .
(b) Show that σuv = σvu for all (u, v) in the domain of σ.
(c) Calculate E = σu · σu , F = σu · σv , G = σv · σv and σu × σv .
(d) Show that σu × σv 6= 0 in the domain of σ. Further, calculate N̄ in the direction
of σu × σv .
(e) Determine L = σuu · N̄, M = σuv · N̄ and N = σuu · N̄.
4. Take the unit circle x2 + y 2 = 1, north pole as (0, 1) and x-axis in xy- plane. Take
any point on the x-axis and and join it with the north pole i.e. (0, 1). Find the point
of intersection of the circle with this line. (Note that every point of the circle except
north pole can be obtained in this way.)
5. Take unit sphere with centre at origin. Take any point on the plane z = 0, say (u, v, 0)
and join it with the north pole i.e. (0, 0, 1). Find the point of intersection of the sphere
with this line. (Note that every point of the sphere except north pole can be obtained
in this way.)
6. Consider the unit sphere x2 + y 2 + z 2 = 1 and the cylinder x2 + y 2 = 1. The sphere is
contained inside the cylinder, and the two surfaces touch along the circle x2 + y 2 = 1
in the xy-plane. For each point P on the sphere other than the poles (0, 0, ±1), there
is a unique straight line parallel to the xy-plane and passing through the point P and
the z-axis. This line intersects the cylinder in two points, one of which, say Q, is
closest to P. Let f be the map from the sphere (minus the two poles) to the cylinder
that takes P to Q. Find a formula for f.
