METHOD STATEMENT

FOR
EARTHWORKS AND CLOSED TURFING
1.0 INTRODUCTION

This method statement describes the construction procedures, including material and
equipment required for the earthwork as required and shown in the construction
drawing. The intention of the method statement is to give a general guideline for the
excavation of all types of material, backfilling, compaction, forming embankments and
slopes as it is necessary for the completion of the works up to formation levels, in
accordance with the lines, grades, dimensions, shapes and typical cross-sections shown
on the Drawing and Specifications. Details of the procedures contained herein may be
reviewed periodically based on actual site condition and requirement.

2.0 SCOPE OF WORK

This method statement describes the earthwork for the engineering remedial works to
slopes at .................. The scope of work includes survey setting of excavation,
backfilling and compaction and protective vegetation for erosion control of remedial
works.

3.3 Material
• Material that has been approved for earthworks and turfing work.

4.0 CONSTRUCTION PROCEDURE

4.1 SETTING OUT

Survey works shall be carried out by establishing bench marks on site. Upon obtaining
all necessary survey data, a joint survey to check existing ground levels shall be carried
out.

4.2 SITE PREPARATION

Site shall be cleared from vegetation, butts and debris before the earth works. All
cleared debris shall be disposed from the site. Precautions shall be taken to prevent the
damage of existing facility/structures and to prevent any erosion of the soil on the
affected areas.

4.3 EXCAVATION
• The Contractor shall notify the S.O. sufficiently in advance of the beginning of
any excavation so that cross-section elevations and measurements may be
taken of the undisturbed ground. The natural ground adjacent to the structure
shall not be disturbed without permission of the S.O.
• Excavations must be kept free from water and temporary drain; sumps and
pumps shall be provided when necessary. The rate of excavation and backfill
shall be approved by the S.O.
• The area shall be cleared of any unwanted material and rubbish before the
commencement of the activity.
• To construct benching as per specification and drawing.
• After each excavation is completed the Contractor shall notify the S.O. to that
effect and no footing, bedding material or structure shall be placed until the S.O.
has approved the depth of excavation.
• All excavated material, that is unsuitable material shall be disposed at
designated dumping area as approved by the S.O.

4.4 BACKFILLING AND COMPACTION

4.4.1 Backfilling
• All fill materials shall be deposited in layers. The loose depth for each layer
of fill shall be determined from the trial compaction.
• Each layer shall extend over the full width of the fill area and shall be
compacted in accordance with the requirements of Subsection 4.4.2.
• Each compacted layer shall be maintained at all times with a sufficiently
even surface in order to drain away the surface waters.
• Effort shall be made to channel the surface run off as much as possible away
from slope area and berm & cascading drain shall be completed before
proceeding to the construction of the next berm

4.4.2 Compaction

• All materials used to embankment and as fill elsewhere shall be compacted as

soon as practicable after being placed and spread. Compaction shall be
undertaken to the requirements of this Section by plant approved by the S.O.
All compaction requirements shall be controlled by means of field density
measurement.
• For compaction of embankment slope, the Contractor may either extend each
compacted layer beyond the design slope surface by at least 600 mm and then
trim back to the required slope angle, or he may employ a tow type roller to
compact the sloping surface
• Compaction trials test shall be done before any backfilling being placed and
spread. This shall include the type of compaction plant for each type of material
and the number of passes in relation to the loose depth of material to achieved
to not less than 90% (for cohesive material) or 95% (for cohesionless material)
of the maximum dry density (MDD).
• The maximum compacted thickness for fill shall be limited to 300mm.
• FDT on each layer of compacted earth fill shall be carried out using the sand
replacement method in accordance with MS1056 (SSRW 2.2.4.4(d)) or by using
other means of testing of comparable accuracy approved by the S.O.
• After every layer (max 300mm compacted layer) of FDT done, survey need to
be carried out to determine the fill height and approved by S.O before proceed
to lay subsequent layer.
• FDT shall be carried out not less than one test per compacted area of 500m2 and
thickness of 300mm per layer (refer to SSRW Clause. 2.2.4.5). However, FDT
shall be performed on the total area compacted on that day, regardless of the
area requirements.
• The process shall be repeated until embankment fill has reach the proposed
platform level.

4.5 Closed Turfing

• Closed turfing shall be carried out as soon as possible as practicable on all earth
slopes and other areas as shown on drawings (No later than five (5) days after
the cut and fill surfaces is initiated)
• Top soil of 50mm thickness shall be spread, lightly compacted to even thickness
of 50mm in areas to be turfed.
• The closed turfing shall be laid to a well bonded pattern with no gaps between
turfed and lightly tamped.
• The contractor shall regularly carry out watering and fertilizing until the
vegetation is satisfaction established.
5.0 Quality Assurance and Quality Control

5.1 Work Inspection Request and Checklist

• Work Inspection Request shall be submitted within 24hours prior to work

inspection.
• The earthworks and closed turfing works shall be carried out using following
checklist:
• Site preparation, Site Clearing and Earthwork Inspection Form,
Document No: ....

5.2 Inspection and Testing Plan

• Refer to ITP for works and material inspection for earthworks.
