Date: 13 Oct. 2017 Weightage: 30%
Time: 1:30-3:00 PM (F207) Marks: 60

Q.1. Identify the corrosion type and conclude the problem and also write your view on prevention methods
for the following two case studies.

a. Case study-1: Plumbing was severely affected in G+5 floors apartment situated in Vienna. All hot water
pipes were made from Galvansied steels. Hot water was flowing at temperature about 80 OC. Every morning
the color of the water becomes red and it gave an offensive odor. The residents of the houses could not use
this hot water for washing purpose as it stained their hands (2+2+2=6M)

b. Case study-2: Leakage occurred in horizontal heat exchanger tubes used for cooling of hydraulic oil. This
leakage was observed in an electric power plant after 18 months of service. Coolant: River water;
Tube: Cu+10%Ni, 9.5 mm diameter, 0.65 mm wall thickness (2+2+2=6M)

Q. 2. Why composites are preferred over metals in equipment’s (Paper / Petroleum industry). With two
examples describe FRP composites and draw the schematic diagram of processing of isotropic composites.
Write the two main disadvantages of FRP composites. (2+2+2=6 M)

Q. 3. Metallic composite can be made by using copper and tantalum or SiC and aluminium (car brakes). Explain
the corrosion of such metallic composite. (2+2=4 M)

Q.4. a. Arrange (low-high) the materials: Cast iron, Alumina, Carbon, Magnesium, Aluminium and Titanium in
terms of its corrosion resistance to seawater and also in terms of fracture toughness. (2+2=4 M)

b. Arrange (low-high) materials of PP, Teflon, PS, PVC, Al, Ti, Polybenzamide in terms of thermal stability (2M)

Q.5. a. Describe Group – III stainless steel and write the significance of SS316 (3 M)

b. Draw the schematic diagram of three different types of cast iron mentioning the
ferrite or cementite and graphite (3 M)

Q.6 a. Describe the effect of corrosive concentration on corrosion rate as shown in

figure. (3 M)
b. Briefly explain about activation polarization with schematic diagram (3 M)

Q.7. a.What do you mean by Dezinfication, and explain the types of Dezinfication and its
mechanism. (2+2=4M)

b. Explain the three different methods used to minimize the intergranular corrosion of
austenitic stainless steels (2)

Q. 8 Write the short answers (14 M)

a. AZ91 alloy b. Pitting on surface of SS which have oxide and MnS inclusions (small diameters)

c. Thermal expansion coefficient of Aluminium and Phenol formaldehyde resin

d. Hydrogen embrittlement e. Corrosion of Carbon fibre+PEEK dental implant;

f. Corrosion of umbrella made from steel g. Electrochemical machining
