Invisible Cities

‘Art of’
Fedora
City of Fedora
Fedora is a very interesting place. In terms of appearance, the city may not be that special than other cities,
however, the culture which keeps possible model of the city is truly unique. In the city, in the crystal globe,
people can see what the place they live could be. In the thumbnails, the crystal globes which is one of the
key characteristics of the city were presented in various ways. Some of them in the museum which is an
interior space, and some are the part of the decoration of an architecture.

When it comes to colors, modern or a little futuristic bluish colors will be used for the final concept art.
As it can be seen in the description, there are blue city models in crystal globes. The model in globes will be
glowing light blue color with a small range of variations. The main focus is to contrast the current form
of the city to the different look of the city in crystal globes by making the city models look quite dreamy
and imaginary place.

In terms of architectures, the city will be interpreted as a modern city with buildings with sharp shapes and
huge paved streets. I would like to deliver this city and its elements in a realistic and believable way with a
semi-photorealistic style. The goal is to make the place seem as if it exists in the real world.

The final shots will include overall cityscape, low angle street view, and interior of the museum. The
cityscape shot will include the overall form of the city with silhouette of its skyline and most iconic
landmarks. The low angle street view will be a more daily-basis perspective giving the sense of
architectures of the city with extra details. Finally, the interior shot will present the key feature of the
city which is crystal globes with past city models.

Influences
Influences
Chicago’s giant metallic sculpture, also known as ‘the
Bean’, is a modern sculpture done in 2006. The designer,
Sir Anish Kapoor, was inspired by liquid mercury. The
sculpture’s surface shows distorted cityscape with its
highly reflective surface. The sculpture is based on
Millennium Park which is the center of Chicago.

I was inspired by this sculpture to put a spherical structure

which is the iconic landmark of Fedora on the park in the
middle of the city center. The original description says the
crystal balls are located in buildings which are museums
nowadays, however, I reinterpreted it as a exterior
monument with a dedicated museum nearby.
Influences
In terms of city design, several parks located in the heart
of the city influenced the overall look of the city concept.
For example, Brasilia and Central Park in New York has
been the greatest inspirations for the park of Fedora. As
well as those two cities, the park in the final concept art is
very rectangular as if it was purpose-designed. That is to
say, Fedora was interpreted as a giant metropolis.

The architectures of Fedora, however, are not meant to be

splendid as those of New York in order to contrast the park
which is supposed to represent the missed opportunities
of the city to the dull and generic modern city
environment.
Influences

The biggest inspiration for the museum of Fedora is the

new city hall of Seoul. The contrast between angular and
blocky skyscrapers and the city hall building with smooth
curvatures is quite unique and this characteristic could
well fit into the description of Fedora.

As the park of Fedora was meant to stand out of the city,

the museum was designed in the same idea. Rather than
the stereotypical classic museums with Roman
architecture, the museum has modern curtain wall style as
Seoul’s city hall. However, unlike the city hall building, the
museum has more angular edges to differentiate from the
original piece.
