Nigeria is a country with 42.54% of her population to be children.

In 2016, Nigeria had nearly 1.5 million teachers in public and private schools, according to the federal
ministry of education:

show one qualified teacher for every 46 pupils in public primary schools, 29 pupils per qualified junior
secondary school teacher and 16 pupils for one qualified teacher in senior classes.

(Note: A teacher is considered qualified in Nigeria if s/he has at least a national certificate in
education.)

These obstacles don’t just lead to poor quality of education, but also contribute to high dropout rates in
rural schools—nearly 50 percent by the age of fourteen. As of 2017,.
The use of Artificial Intelligence can help in mitigating aforementioned concerns.

Advanced technologies can enhance how we learn, teach and perform tasks. In a developing country like
Nigeria, schools lack experienced teachers and resources to enhance students’ knowledge. As a result
education gaps have been created, especially in rural areas. AI tools such as personalized learning
assistants can simplify learning by making tutoring services and learning materials accessible to all
students, wherever they are. Machines can be automated to help students learn basic concepts without a
tutor, which companies like Carnegie Learning are working on. This would allow students to learn at
anytime from anywhere. With AI, education is made easy and accessible to more people.

Many instances of differentiated/personalized learning being implemented using artificial intelligence are
already appearing in modern education. One such example is Cram101, where artificial intelligence is
used to greatly improve the value and efficiency of studying with a textbook. This software, developed by
Content Technologies Inc. (CTI), uses AI technology to scrape through the content of a textbook and
present it to a student in a manner that is more effective and personalized than conventional studying. By
using chapter summaries, cue-cards, true-false and multiple-choice quizzes based on the material in the
textbook, this software will be able to make studying from a textbook a quicker, more effectual process,
where it is easier for students to target topics on which they need to focus more.
Another instance of artificial intelligence being used to deliver a personalized learning experience is
Carnegie Learning’s MATHiaU program . MATHiaU delivers a personalized learning experience for math
students that can adapt greatly to the strengths, weaknesses, needs and goals of each individual to help
them learn in the most effective manner possible. Its many innovative features, such as adaptive feedback,
progress visualization, thorough assessment of what the student is thinking, and predictive reporting of the
student’s expected growth, are what makes this application of AI so useful. A certain study found that the
Carnegie Learning blended approach, in its second year of implementation, nearly doubled growth in
performance on standardized tests relative to typical students validating the success of MATHiaU as a
method of differentiated learning.

Cram101 and MATHiaU are two of the many instances of differentiated learning becoming a reality using
artificial intelligence. Not only will this innovation result in a more effective education experience for
students, but it will also decrease the time and effort that today’s teachers and professors must dedicate to
the accommodation of each student’s unique learning style. Differentiated learning is not the only
application of AI technology related to education, however it is one that will have dramatic positive impact
on the learning experience of students and teaching experience of instructors, and its benefits will only
continue to grow as this technology advances.
