Define workplace diversity:

Diversity in the workplace refers to an organization that intentionally employs a workforce


comprised of individuals of varying gender, religion, race, age, ethnicity, sexual orientation,
education, and other attributes. Diversity in the workplace adds value to an organization by
allowing workers to approach their jobs from different perspectives. Many employers recognize
the need for workplace diversity and initiate strategies to maintain a diverse workforce.

Types of diversity in an organization are as follows.

1) Surface level diversity


2) Deep level diversity

Surface Level Diversity:

It refers to observable differences in people, including race, age, ethnicity, physical abilities,
physical characteristics and gender.Surface level diversity reflects characteristics that are
observable and known about people as soon as you see them.

Deep level diversity:

It refers to individual differences that cannot be seen directly, including goals, values,
personalities, decision making styles and abilities. it takes more time to learn about these
factors but have strong influence on organizational performance.

Why managing diversity is so important in organization?

Diversity raises important ethical issues and social responsibility issues. It is also a critical issue
for organizations one that if not handled well can bring an organization to its knees, especially
in our increasingly global environment. There are several reasons why managing diversity is so
important in organization ,diversity is such a pressing concern and an issue both in the popular
press and for managers and organizations

Reasons behind why managing workforce diversity is important are as follows.


People management:
The ability to create and foster relationships with people. In the workplace, having these skills
means being able to form relationships with colleagues and subordinates. For employees in a
managerial position, it involves giving the team the proper motivation, staying on track with
projects, knowing the needs of every individual member of the team and how they can help
satisfy those needs and reach goals.

Organizational performance:
An analysis of a company's performance as compared to goals and objectives. Within corporate
organizations, there are three primary outcomes analyzed: financial performance, market
performance and shareholder value performance in some cases, production capacity
performance may be analyzed. Organization performance can improve workforce diversity by
improved their problem solving abilities and system cooperation.

Strategic:
Organization get benefit from their diverse workforce by using different strategies because
managing diverse workforce strategically is important to get best talent, performance, market
share and supplier from different countries. One important strategic benefit for diverse
workforce in an organization is to predict and give response in a better way according to
changing consumer demand in the market. Diverse employees can improve that how
organization market to diverse consumer. This workforce has ability to get better competitive
advantage in the market but without innovation it is difficult for any organization to survive in
such environment. Innovation is very difficult because in today world it is more challenging.
Another important strategy for diverse workforce is to treat ethically. It is illegal to treat diverse
people unfairly .Cultural strong ethical belief is to provide equal opportunities and treat them
fairly and justly with their diverse people. In business the ethical way is to build a good
relationship with their employees.
