The Emergence of Modern Universities in France, 1863-1914

GEORGE WEISZ, 1983
Princeton, New Jersey, Princeton University Press
ISBN 0 691 101973
$17.50

George Weisz offers the first attempt at comprehensive analysis of the French
university system during the latter half of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
Examining the major reforms of higher education undertaken during the Third
Republic, he argues that the original thrust for reform came from within the educa-
tional system, especially from an academic profession seeking to raise its occupational
status.
Thus study is highly relevant to current debates about the capacity of French
society for significant incremental change.

surements.

The Rise of Statistical Thinking, 1820-1900

THEODORE M. PORTER, 1986
Princeton, Princeton University Press
ISBN 0 691 08416 5
$35.00
Downloaded by [Anadolu University] at 07:56 25 December 2014

This book presents the diverse 19th-century origins of the mathematical tool of our
day. Emphasising the debt of science to non-specialist intellectuals. Theodore Porter
describes in detail the 19th-century background that produced the burst of modern
statistical innovation of the early 1900s. Statistics arose as a study of society, the
science of the statistician, and the pioneering statistical physicists and biologists,
Maxwell, Boltzmann, and Galton. .
The author also examines significant philosophical issues raised by the develop-
ment of statistics in the 1800s. For a time, the evident success of statistical social
science was held to be inconsistent with human free will.
Debates concerning the nature of statistical knowledge were central to the new
indeterminism that began to emerge at the end of the century.

The Systematic Experiment

J. C. GIBBING, 1986
Cambridge University Press
ISBN 0 521 31217 5
£10.95

This book explains how to plan, execute, analyse and write up an experiment.
Experimentation is an essential part of science and engineering, being both the basis of
discovery in science and an integral part of engineering development. The authors' aim
is to provide instruction in how to perform a systematic experiment from its
conception and design through to the communication of results.
The book includes a chapter on the interfacing of experimental equipment to micro
computers.

Controversy in Victorian Geology: The Cambrian-Silurian Dispute

in 19th-century science-the controversy over the proper boundary between the

Cambrian and Silurian divisions in the oldest fossil-bearing rocks. By integrating the
social and technical aspects of the conflict, the author opens up a range of new
approaches to the history of natural science in the Victorian era. The result is a vivid
story of the human effects of scientific partisanship and an important contribution to
the study of the actual practice of science.

Solving Problems in Fluid Mechanics

Volume 1 and Volume 2
J. F. DOUGLAS, 1986
Singapore, Longman, Scientific & Technical
Downloaded by [Anadolu University] at 07:56 25 December 2014

Volume 1. ISBN 0 582 28641 7

Volume 2. ISBN 0 582 28643 3
£7.95 net each

This problem-based textbook has been designed to give the student a practical
understanding of the fundamentals of fluid mechanics.
Volume 1 assumes only an elementary knowledge of mathematics and mechanics.
The main part of the book covers the elements of hydrostatics, fluid pressure and the
stability of floating bodies, followed by chapters explaining the basic principles of the
analysis of fluid motion, methods of flow measurement, a study of pipelines, open
channel flow and fluid friction.
Volume 2 contains a clear exposition of the more advanced aspects of the subject.
The book begins with an explanation of dimensional analysis and its application to
dynamical similarity, the use of models for the study of fluid flow, theoretical
hydrodynamics involving stream functions and the behaviour of gases at rest and in
motion. These chapters are followed by a detailed study of viscous and turbulent flow,
the flow around immerses bodies, channel flow, and the fluid mechanics of pumps and
turbines.

Power System Analysis

CHARLES A. GROSS, 1986, 2nd edn
New York, John Wiley
ISBN 0 471 86 206 1
$38.50

This second edition of Power System Analysis is a text for introductory courses in
power system analysis. Prerequisite topics are sinusoidal steady-state circuit theory,
basic matrix notations and operations, and basic computer programming.
A new feature of the second edition is the discussion of balanced three-phase
circuit concepts as a special case of a balanced N-phase operation. This approach will
enhance students' understanding of the three-phase case. A concerted effort is made
here to render such concepts as clear as possible, preserving those traditional conven-
tions that ate reasonable and avoiding those that are basically illogical.

Polarization in Antennas and Radar

HAROLD Mo'rr, 1986
New York, John Wiley
ISBN 0 471 011673
$40.35

The text intended for use at the graduate or advanced undergraduate level for engineering
and physics students and as a reference for radar and communications engineers. It is
expected to be useful also for those working with coherent light sources.
Polarisation effects can provide significant identification information about radar
targets, and the use of an optimum polarisation can increase target cross sections,
decrease rain and ground clutter, and ameliorate the effects of jamming on radar and
communication systems. Adaptive arrays can be used for polarisation adaptivity as well

as for beam forming and null steering. Other examples can be cited microwave and
millimeter-wave radar and communications, and for optics. There is a clear need for a
wider dissemination of the methods of treating polarisation problems, and the book is
aimed to answer that need.

Probabilities de L'Ingenieur I-Variables aleatolees et simulation

NICOLAS BOULEAU, 1986
Paris, Hermann
ISBN 2 7056 14184
FF130.00

This textbook concerning probabilities tends to set up a link between the understand-
ing of real situations and their modelisation, within a rigorous theory.
The pedagogical approach of this manual aims also to rely probabilities with the
use of computers.
The book includes some historical sources and various developments for research.

Elastic and Plastic Fracture

A. G. ATKINS, 1985
Chichester, Ellis Horwood
ISBN 0 85312 562 7

Understanding fracture for both safety and economy, and interest in the role of cracks
and defects in engineering failure, has stimulated work on crack initiation and
propagation in many scientific disciplines, e.g. materials science, metallurgy, polymer
science, physics, ceramics, adhesives, geological science, bio-mechanics, and many
others: particularly where these disciplines impinge on high technology.
The systematic approach to fracture in this impressive book embraces a wide range
of elastic, elastoplastic and plastic cracking problems.
New light is shed on old problems, e.g. the scale effect in fracture, stability of
cracking, and transitions between different modes of deformation (which relates to
elastic, e1astoplastic and plastic design methods).
The authors have successfully, in this work, opened up communication between
scientists whose paths do not normally cross and the book thereby has the promise of a
classic work of reference. There are numerous worked examples, an extensive biblio-
graphy, and a valuable table of testpieces and their crack stability conditions.

New York, John Wiley
ISBN 0 471 89018 9
$29.95

The technician, engineer, or programmer who is preparing to use microprocessors

should study both their software and hardware in depth. A student with basic math
skills, an understanding of electrical circuit theory, and an earnest desire to learn, will
profit immensely from the information contained in this book. The first half (Chapters
1 to 8) deals exclusively with digital electronics and the information related to
microprocessors in these chapters is plentiful.
The second half of the book offers instruction on the two most popular micropro-

cessors now on the market: the Intel 8080 A and the Intel 8085. From an educational
viewpoint, learning an 8-bit instruction set like the 8080 As is faster and easier than
tackling the instruction set of a 16- or 32-bit microprocessor, especially for a student
with no previous knowledge of computers.
