Global city is an emphasis on the flow of information and capital. Cities are major nodes
in the interconnected systems of information and money, and the wealth that they capture
is intimately related to the specialized businesses that facilitate those flows -- financial
institutions, consulting firms, accounting firms, law firms, and media organizations.
Cultural imperialism occurs when one community imposes or exports various aspects of
its own way of life onto another community. The cultural part of the term refers to local
customs, traditions, religion, language, social and moral norms, and so on—features of a
way of life that are distinct from, though often closely related to, the economic and political
systems that shape a community. The imperialism part of the term indicates that the
imposing community forcefully extends the authority of its way of life over another
population by either transforming or replacing aspects of the target population's culture.
That is, cultural imperialism does not typically refer to occasions when a population
voluntarily appropriates aspects of another culture into its own.
Global village describes the phenomenon of the world becoming more interconnected as
the result of the propagation of media technologies throughout the world. It refers to the
idea of an increasingly unified world where effects of globalization allow us to overcome
the limitations of physical distance.
Global city is a city that plays a significant role in the global economic system. It
also talks about how advances the technology and media in a certain city. According
to Saskia Sassen in 1991 has been expanded from its original strictly economic definition
to include the economic, political and cultural importance of a global center and If global
cities are currently understood to be centers of importance for large parts of the world.
According to Low (2005) further says that a global city is a city that is well thought out to
be an important node in the world’s economic system. A global city has wealth, power
and influence to other countries as well as hosts the largest capital markets.
My referred global city is Spain, because we all know that Spain is modern nation’s
dynamic identity and their culture really influences us especially the Filipino’s. One of the
cultural influences of Spain on us is their love of celebrations and festivals because Spain
is a home to many unique festivals and celebrations throughout the year. Second is the
Spanish Cuisine especially the hot thick soup, the rice dishes and the different stews. The
Spain also influences us the artistic heritage, there are so many heritages that you can
see in the Philippines one of them is the Baroque Church ad different Churches not only
in the Philippines but also to the different country. In Spain the most important period of
celebration is the Holy Week or (Semana Santa), the annual tribute to the Passion of
Jesus Christ, just like in the Philippines this also one of the most important celebration. In
Spain they celebrate it in Easter, the dates vary each year between the last two weeks of
March to the first two weeks of April. In the different country we also celebrate it vary the
month and date. Actually, there are so many cultural influences of the Spain that we are
practicing here in the Philippines not in the Philippines but also to different countries.
I choose the Spain as a global city because of the powerful, strong and unique
culture, style and history. Culture and the history is one of important businesses in a city
that provides many tourist attractions. The Spain also has been very powerful and
influential in the development of world culture. A culture may not necessarily mean the
traditions and values in that particular city but also the art, food, music, costume and
architecture. According to Philippe Legrain, the chief economist of Britain and a former
advisor in the World Trade Organization, is adamant that globalization is a positive
cultural trend. He states, “The beauty of globalization is that it can free people from the
tyranny of geography…. That we are increasingly free to choose our cultural experiences
enriches our lives immeasurably”. And according to June Johnson, author of Global
Issues, Local Arguments, states, “The idea of the world’s cultures drawn together in a
global village raises questions about equal representation, reciprocal sharing, enriched
diversity, and mutual understanding”
