The Story Behind Why I Choose to Take Up Bachelor of Secondary Education

Major in English
My name is Danica Joy Besa and I am a sophomore attending Sultan Kudarat
State University (SKSU) taking up Bachelor of Secondary Education major in English.
When I was young, I really don’t know what I wanted to become, but every time people
ask me, I always say I wanted to become a teacher. I don’t know why but, those words
or sentences automatically comes out in my mouth every time people ask me. As I
start thinking about my future, I questioned myself and tried to figure out what are
things that would work out and be the best for me. Sometimes, when I think of it, I end
up still undecided and nothing to choose. But sometimes, becoming an educator or a
teacher is in my head. I always wanted to be a help or a contributor not just to the
people but also to the society and I think to be an educator is one way I can achieve
it. That’s when my thoughts of becoming a teacher started and that time, I know the
reason why.
Ever since, I always see and hear sayings like, “Education is the Key to
Success” and “My Teacher, My Hero” and I can’t agree more with those sayings
because it only states what is true. Education is one of the important tools we can ever
have because it can bring success in our life. Having an education puts us in the best
place to have a secured future for ourselves. As for teachers, I really salute to all the
teachers and I believe they really are a hero. Teachers must deal with students, they
make lesson plans, they have tons of paper works and mountains of test papers. But
despite of the demanding situation and long working hours, teachers persevere and
endure knowing the important role they play in molding the mind of future generations.
One experience that I can’t forget was when I become a teacher for a day as part of
our immersion program when in I was in Senior High School. It just feels so good, the
thought of helping and sharing your knowledge to other people feels overwhelming.
That’s why even though others will say that being a teacher is a stressful profession, I
still decided to take up education.
Talking about why I chose English as my major. I’m not a writer, I’m also not
fund of reading books and not even good at public speaking, but I wanted to acquire
those skills and I think I can work on it. I majored in English because I think it would
help me be skilled in writing, reading and especially in communicating. I am also
inspired with my English teachers when I was in High School especially my English
teacher during my Senior High School years. In addition to that, I also believe that I
would learn more regarding the English language that would be very helpful to me
especially in today’s generation where English is used everywhere. I really want to
have a very good communication skills or public speaking ability for I believe that, for
you to become an effective teacher you must have a very good communication skills
so that you can convey your thoughts, ideas and experiences very well that would be
very helpful and useful for the students, and you can have also a very good relationship
with your students. I believe every individual is living with a purpose. There are some
people especially teenagers who still don’t know exactly who they are and what they
want to do in their lives. It is important that when opportunity presents itself, don’t take
it for granted instead, take advantage of it. Explore and try different things to discover
what is out there for you. So, when college years come, you can choose to study the
course that you want and can do the things that you love in the future. College years
is the time where you choose a major or a career path that will carry you for the rest
of your life. So, we should always choose what we want and what we love.
