I. Context and Rationale

Science is an area of the curriculum that plays a central role in the development

of children’s logical and critical thinking abilities. It is widely viewed as being a difficult

subject, both by pupils and primary teachers and children’ s understanding of science is

a major concern for educators (Lewthwaite, 2011). There have been numerous studies

that investigated the effectiveness of different teaching methods and materials to

overcome students’ misconceptions and learning difficulties. In these studies,

conceptual change approach, computer aided instruction, group discussion,

constructivist teaching method, problem-based learning, analogies and students’

worksheets were generally investigated (Yildirim, 2011). Worksheets can be a good way

to practice drill skills. Depending on the organization of the worksheet, they may also

help students if they have visuals and more open space instead of crowding a lot of text

into a condensed area like textbooks or some articles can do (Duryea. 2017). This study

will determine the effectiveness of using worksheets in teaching Earth and Life Science

among Grade 11 HUMSS students at La Union National High School Senior High

School. The result of this study will serve as a strong basis in the formulation and

modification of new teaching strategies which will prove useful in the teaching-learning

process. Specifically, it will answer the research queries on the degree of effectiveness

of using worksheets in teaching earth and life science among Grade 11 HUMSS

students of LUNHS SHS. The descriptive developmental research design will be used

with the questionnaire as the data gathering tool. The researcher will gather data from

80 students. This study will also assess the degree of effectiveness of worksheets on

the mastery of content, mastery of skills, innovation and value formation of Grade 11
HUMSS students of LUNHS SHS. In the light of the findings, the researchers will

recommend the modification of the use of worksheets and the integration of values and

collaboration.

II. Action Research Questions

This study aimed to assess and determine the degree of effectiveness of using

worksheets in teaching earth and life science among grade 11 HUMSS students of La

Union National High School Senior High School.

Specifically, the study aims to answer the following problems:

1. What is the degree of importance of using of worksheets in teaching earth and life

science to grade 11 HUMSS students along:

a. ‘Mastery of content

b. Mastery of skills

c. Innovation; and

d. Value-formation

2. What is the degree of effectiveness of using worksheets in teaching earth and life

science to grade 11 HUMSS students along:

1. ‘Mastery of content

2. Mastery of skills

3. Innovation; and

4. Value-formation

3. What new teaching strategies and techniques can be proposed to make teaching

earth and life science more effective?

4. What is the level of validity of the proposed teaching strategies and techniques?
III. Proposed Innovation and Intervention

Assessment in Education or Educational Assessment is a tool that’s used generally for

measuring or determining the “personal attributes” of a learner (especially in terms of

strengths and weaknesses). It serves three main purposes - the Classroom, Guidance

and Administrative purposes ) (Egbetade, 2017). The use of worksheets is an example

of formative assessment tool that allows teachers to determine the depth of

understanding of each student, allowing them to both shape the next steps to best help

the student reach the next phases of understanding and to track their own successes

and weaknesses to improve their own performance as educators (Huber,

2011).Worksheets can be a very good way to assess the level of understanding of our

students but worksheets alone can insufficiently help them achieve the desired learning

goals. Teacher-modified worksheets can help boost the learning capabilities of our

students. Learning should not only be limited to the acquisition of skills and knowledge

but also the formation of values and good character. Teachers must redesign

worksheets and other learning materials such that collaboration and values integration

are greatly emphasized. Worksheets must include both individual work (short quiz,

recitation, essay writing) and collaborative work (group reporting, group experiment,

group investigation) reflection, sharing of insights and lessons learned.

IV. Action Research Methods

a) Participants and other Sources of Data Information

The general intent of this study is to assess the effectiveness of using

worksheet in teaching ELS (Earth and Life Science) among grade 11 HUMSS students.
The research will be conducted on La Union National High School Senior High. This

study limits its coverage to grade 11 HUMSS students only.

Technique Used In Selecting Respondents. The researchers will

use random sampling technique by using fishbowl method. Numbers will be assigned to

each section. The sections for experimental group and control group will be picked

randomly.

b) Data Gathering

The experimental groups will be given teacher-made worksheets for one chapter

and the control groups will not be given worksheets. The experimental and control

groups will be given the same chapter test (teacher-made).

The result of the scores of the respondents used will be summarized in a table

and it will be attached to this research.

c) Data Analysis Plan

To assess the effectiveness of using worksheet in teaching ELS among grade 11

HUMSS students, the weighted mean will be used. The formula to be used to get the

weighted mean is:

x
X=
Where:
N
X= Weighted Mean

= Frequency

x= Rating
N= Number of Respondents
