Personality

Personality, a characteristic way of thinking, feeling, and behaving. Personality embraces moods, attitudes, and
opinions and is most clearly expressed in interactions with other people.

It includes behavioral characteristics, both inherent and acquired, that distinguish one person from another and that
can be observed in people’s relations to the environment and to the social group.

Macionis define as “ It is the constant pattern of thinking , feeling and acting . ”

Ogburn and Nimkoff define it as the totality of sentiments , attitudes, idea , habits , skills and behavior of an
individual.

The term personality has been defined in many ways, but as a psychological concept two main meanings have
evolved:-

1. The first pertains to the consistent differences that exist between people: in this sense, the study of
personality focuses on classifying and explaining relatively stable human psychological characteristics.
2. The second meaning emphasizes those qualities that make all people alike and that distinguish
psychological man from other species; it directs the personality theorist to search for those regularities
among all people that define the nature of man as well as the factors that influence the course of lives.

It should be emphasized, however, that no definition of personality has found universal acceptance within the field.

The study of personality can be said to have its origins in the fundamental idea that people are distinguished by their
characteristic individual patterns of behavior —the distinctive ways in which they walk, talk, furnish their living
quarters, or express their urges. Whatever the behavior personologists (as those who systematically study
personality are called) examine how people differ in the ways they express themselves and attempt to determine
the causes of these differences.

Case study :- Extrovert Personality

Extroverts are often described as the life of the party. Their outgoing, vibrant nature draws
people to them, and they have a hard time turning away the attention. They thrive off the
interaction.
In the 1960s, psychologist Carl Jung first described introverts and extraverts when discussing
personality elements. (The term now commonly used is extroverts.) Jung argued extroverts
are energized by crowds and interaction with the external world.

As Jung discovered, being an extrovert isn’t an all or nothing option. Instead, most people
fall somewhere on a spectrum between the two polar ends. In the years since Jung’s
theories first became popular, research has discovered there are genetic and hormonal
reasons some people display more extroverted characteristics than others.

Case study:-Rahul Dravid

A leader, a teammate and a wonderful human being, these words personify

‘The Wall’, Rahul Dravid in all their glory. Rahul Dravid’s teammates didn’t
nickname him Mr. Dependable for anything. This speaks volumes of his
efficiency as a leader.

What lessons can we draw from The Wall?

1. ‘Never say die’ attitude of Rahul Dravid

Rahul Dravid was one person who would never give up in the face of adversity. A good
example to illustrate this would be back in 2001 during the three-match series against
Australia at the Eden Gardens. India, who was already at the bottom of the league was
lagging behind in the second match when Rahul Dravid appeared at No. 6 partnering with
Laxman. The only aim in Dravid’s mind at that point was to put up a fight. Lo and behold!
India won the match by 171 runs! We learn an important le\sson here- When everything
seems to turn against you, never ever give up hope. Strive and work hard towards giving it
your best and that is all that matters.

2. Being ‘The Wall’

Dravid always protected his team. The nickname ‘The Wall’ from Reebok advertisements
rightly fits him.

In the corporate sector, the number 3 position is held by CROs and they have to play the
cards well when the top management is deteriorating. They provide a defense mechanism
and become a shield for the organization. Hence they become the wall. In a similar
manner, Rahul Dravid who held the number 3 position in the batting order was ‘The Wall’ of
the Indian cricket team with his consistency, grace, and patience.

3. You have to become a team player before becoming a leader

In life, one has to learn to co-operate, sacrifice and engage with the rest of the crowd, if
results have to be seen. This is true w.r.t cricket as well. Rahul Dravid has the natural ability
to do what is required for his team.

The Indian team once decided to take an extra batsman and that meant one player had to
step down and play the role of wicketkeeper. Rahul Dravid played the role of a finisher and
dropped down to number 5. This also brought down his opportunity to score hundreds.
However, he did this gracefully for the sake of his team.

8
4 Strength of mind

Rahul Dravid has always had high concentration levels. He was never provoked by the
media and never got into any controversies with his opponents. His game spoke volumes
rather than any comments or criticism. He was always mentally strong. It was this quality in
him that made him perform so well.

5. Consistency is key

Rahul Dravid did not attain success overnight. It was through hard work and perseverance
that he slowly and steadily achieved each milestone. It took him around 10 matches to
score his first half-century and around 33 matches for his first century. This proves that to
master anything one has to be consistent.

How successful people develop their personality

There are a core set of personality traits that are common to all successful people.

They are:-

1. A Need to Compete:-Being successful is fundamentally about needing to win; the

reasons vary, but the determination doesn't.

2. The Capacity to Let go:-Successful people are not anchored by the past. They learn
from it--fast--and move on to a bigger challenge.
3. A Passion for Improvement:-Successful people are perpetually trying to improve
themselves.
4. Obsessive Attention to Detail:- most successful people got there by doing just that
when they were the ones doing the small stuff.
5. Keeping an Inventory of Accomplishment:-Successful people keep track of their
achievements.
6. Compulsively Working their Network:-One of the most consistently common traits
of successful people is their ability to relentlessly work their network.

7. Rewarding Themselves:-When you're running at full throttle you need to take time
to take care of yourself. Emotionally and physically
8. Being Grateful:-They realized how fortunate they were to be where they were, and
weren't shy about sharing it.
9. Not Wavering in a Crisis:-One of the greatest determinants of success is the ability
to keep your head in a firestorm. Successful people do not lose their sense of
purpose or direction in a crisis,
10. Striving for Authenticity:- For successful people being authentic means that they
are clear in expressing their opinions and consistently truthful and transparent.

11. Taking Responsibility:-Owning the failure is a trait that not only engenders trust
but also demonstrates to others

10
12. Advocating for Their Customers:-Even the most hard-nosed and callous CEOs
become models of charm and deference when they are in front of their customers.

13. Discounting the Praise of Others--Successful people find that their jokes get
funnier and the number of people who agree with them rises exponentially.
14. Desire to Give Back--One of the most rewarding things about achieving any degree
of success is the opportunity to encourage and motivate others.
15. Refusing to be Defined by Their Failures--Nobody is 100% successful. Success is a
net positive outcome that always includes an abundance of failure,
experimentation, and learning
