The Philippines is home to the world’s biggest

pear- the Pearl of Allah. But do you know how pearls are

formed?

Out of pain can come a beautiful jewel like the

pearl. A grain of sand that enters the oysters irritates it

and causes it pain. The oyster reacts by releasing a liquid

to ease the pain. The liquid accumulates around the

foreign material and covers it. This marks the beginning

of the pearl. Constant pain because of the irritation of

the foreign material causes the liquid to accumulate

around the foreign body. The liquid then hardens and

form a pearl. So the pearl is a consequence of the

oyster’s resistance to the pain of a foreign object.

The story of the pearl is reflected all around us.

When there is no suffering and no struggle, there is no

SAD LITTLE HOUSES

Amparo R. Asuncion

The sad little houses, the poor little houses

Crowd by the riverside

The holes in their roofs, the cracks in their walls

Vainly they tried to hide.

The stench of the river, the dark muddy river

Is with them night and day

Pure, fresh air may be had for the moving,

But they can’t move away.

They can only stand by the bank of the river

Buried knee-deep in clay,

They can only stare at the drifting garbage

Until they, too, decay.

And, pass away into ghosts of houses

Killed by a burning sun,

Smothered with dust

And then forgotten – forgotten by everyone.
