Character Collage- Flo Owens, Picnic by William Inge

For my character collage in my acting class, I created a playlist of songs for a character I was

playing, Flo Owens, and then I wrote a found poem for Flo using one continuous lyric from each

of the songs in the playlist . The playlist is on apple music, and is entitled

“flo owens, because life isn’t always a picnic.'’

It has 26 songs, and is 1 hour and 26 minutes long. A couple songs are repeated because I use

them twice. My poem has 8 stanzas, with 1-4 being about my husband who used to drink and left

us, and 5-8 being about my oldest daughter Madge, who runs away with a boy who reminds me
of my own husband. It really helped my understand Flo’s arc, from before the play starts to after

it ends. I am currently in stanza 5 during my scene. This is the cover photo on the playlist.

hope is a dangerous thing for a woman like me to have- Lana Del

Rey
For the first two loves of my life,

Because life isn’t always a picnic,

And if is but then there’s a lot of ants.

I learned the truth at seventeen

that love was made for beauty queens

and high school girls with clear skinned smiles

who married young and then retired.

II

Today I met the boy I’m gonna marry

He’s all I’ve wanted all my life and even more

So honey take me by the hand and we can sign some papers

Forget the invitations, floral arrangements, and bread makers

They tell me that I'm a fool

But I wouldn’t be able to feel love

If it wasn’t for breaking rules

Ever fallen in love with someone

You shouldn’t’ve fallen in love with?

III

Big monster lover

Bigger pusher over

Did she give you what you hoped for

Nights of loveless love

I hope it made you feel good

Knowing how much I adore you

And I can’t be the girl you want

But I can be the thing you throw away

Throw away

Throw

Away

You just crack another beer

and pretend that you’re still here

This is how to disappear

And I give you so many shots

But you just drink them all

Wept a lot

You slept a lot

I was left a lot

IV

Shadows settle on the place that you left

Troubled by the emptiness

I won’t say a word but

I think he knows

That I’ve hardly slept since the night he left

Happiness is a butterfly

She wore blue velvet

Bluer than velvet were her eyes

Warmer than may

Her tender sighs

Love was ours

VI

I’m sorry if I smothered you

Wolf Mother

Worried Shoes

Summertime Sadness
Shadows settled on the place that you left

Gone was the glow of

Blue velvet

VII

I’m sick of losing soulmates

Won’t be alone again

I can finally see you’re as fucked up as me

All my limbs can become trees

All my children can become me

What a mess I leave to follow

To follow

To

Follow

VIII

I believe a woman loves stronger than a man

Hope is a dangerous thing for a

Woman

Like me

To have
