viscous fluid. The shaft is of 0.1m diameter and 0.4m long. When the pendulum is vibrating,
the amplitude of successive cycles are 9, 6 and 4. Determine: i) Logarithmic decrement;
ii) Damping torque at unit velocity; iii) Periodic time of vibration; iv) Frequency when the
disc is removed from the fluid in CPS. Take G = 44 GPa. (10 Marks)

3 a. What is vibration control? Briefly explain the different ways to achieve the vibration control.

b. A milling machine of mass 450kg operates at 1800 rpm and has an unbalance which causes
a harmonic repeated force of magnitude 20,000N. Design an isolation system to limit the
transmitted force to 4000N, the amplitude of vibration during operation to 1mm and the
amplitude of vibration during start-up to 10mm. Determine the required stiffness of the
isolator and the minimum mass that should be added to the machine. Take the damping ratio
of 0.05. (10 Marks)
5 a. Define experimental modal analysis and explain in brief the necessary equipments for the
