BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Living this life in this generation is more stressful and frustrating. Given the high

standards in our corporate world and in almost everything, we always need to

cope up and evolve as much as we can so that we can stand out among the

rest. Thus, we train, we study and we push ourselves to grow more. Throughout

that evolution, if you succeed, you must evolve again and again. Our lives are

occupied by our academic activities. We often skip meals just to finish our work

which badly affects our physical and mental health. Of course, if you do not

work, you will not earn money and without money there is no food.

Food is an essential part of everyone’s lives. Basically, we eat to live. Every cell

in our body depends on a continuous supply of calories and nutrients that helps

us grow and develop, think and do things we need to do in order to survive.

Food is not limited as the source of our energy, it also gives us happiness and

contentment that gives us the drive to work. All of us have turned to food at one

time or another for comfort, to help us cope up with stressful experiences, to

control our emotions, and to satisfy needs. Satisfying this need fulfills only a

small portion of the first step in Abraham Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs. Although

it only occupies a small portion, it greatly affects all of the other needs above it.

Eating is something people often take for granted until faced with a situation in

which they are unable to eat. The loss of the ability to eat is similar to any loss

we may experience in our lives.

The ability to eat and the enjoyment of eating are important aspects of good

quality of life. In other words, “being able to eat what I want, when I want, where

I want” makes us feel good. In our food industry today, there are many food

innovations that possesses the quality of being carried easily and can be eaten

while walking or anywhere you like, for short the convenience. Here in the

Philippines, given that our people are hardworking, we demand food products

that are cheap, accessible and easy to consume. For instance, millennials really

liked the sense of putting a serving of fried French fries on top of a cup with the

drink of their choice but French fries are originally from Belgium and Filipinos

embraced it, what more if we infuse Filipino cuisine to food products of the

modern generation.

Filipino Cuisine reflects the centuries of colonization of other countries to

the Philippine Islands. Foreign influences significantly affected the way

Filipinos cook. Foreign influence is not limited to the way they cook, but also

introduced ingredients that are commonly used now and played a big role

in every Filipino. Traditional Filipino way of cooking originally just involves

boiling, grilling, roasting and steaming. Filipino cuisine is very diverse that

you can’t describe it with just one dish. Unlike Philippines’ Southeast Asian

neighbors, most of the Filipinos do not eat chili-hot dishes. Yet, many dishes

in the southern region, which is predominantly Muslim, makes use of chili

and coconut milk. Now, Filipinos uses spoon and fork to eat but traditionally

Filipinos uses their bare hands to eat. There is a local Maguindanaoan

delicacy which is called “Pastil” and it is synonymous to Maranao’s “Pater”

Pinoy Pastil

Of STI college Santa Rosa 1.2
or “Binalot sa Dahon”. “Pastil” is one of the known delicacies from Filipinos

and a native dish to the Muslim part of the Philippines which is Mindanao.

Inside this delicacy, cooked rice topped with ‘Kagikit’ or sautéed shredded

meat of beef, chicken or fish is found and of course it is wrapped with wilted

banana leaf which serves as its packaging. It can be eaten with spoon and

fork, with your hands or just eat it like a burger. Given that this delicacy do

not use pork as a viand, it is considered to be religion friendly especially to

our Muslim and Adventist friends. Our religion also interferes with how we

choose the food we eat, our budget and our time.

For a person who does not have enough budget and time, these kind of

food products are perfect for them. Many Filipinos liked this idea thus many

mini stores popped out of nowhere, offering the same product but

competing with the quality of the product. Since they are cheap and fast to

make, the quality and nutritive value suffers. Hence, many people turned

their heads and patronized imported products from other countries,

especially the United States and other countries, because they think it is

more worth it and it actually adds up in their social status. On the other hand,

we can still claim that Filipino cuisine is a force to be reckoned with because

we are a melting pot of diverse and abundant supply of raw materials but

because of some food stores, their bad products left a scar on Filipino

cuisine’s reputation. The domination of foreign food products made people

turn their back from Filipino Cuisine.

Pinoy Pastil

Of STI college Santa Rosa 1.3
Most of the existing food products in our food industry are processed, the

good taste is still there but there is no certainty that they used only safe and

good ingredients and especially if you have things to consider in your

religion, it is very hard to trust products that are already processed. Also

due to many factors such as their packaging, additives, and many more, the

price is significantly affected, making them unaffordable to many. In

addition, even if they are in solo packs or easy-to-open packaging, you

cannot eat it without a plate or a cup.

1.2. STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

Most people, especially millennials, seek fast food products or known food

products because it is a trend, literally prepared fast and already established

a good image to the public and the industry. In addition, consumers in this

generation are patronizing foreign products, especially when it comes to

clothing and food products. Now more than ever, consumers especially

Filipinos do not consume and patronize local products that much. The love

and loyalty for one’s own pride and identity is slowly vanishing. Some of the

food stores here in Santa Rosa, specifically here in Balibago, Complex, offer

food products that are not that safe to eat, low in nutritive value, and not

convenient to eat. Due to this, 28% of grade 12 students in STI College

Santa Rosa often skip lunch. Hence, the proponents made an innovative

product that has aspects from fast food and local cuisine combined. On the

other hand, the proponents would like to know if this product can meet all

Pinoy Pastil
A food product favored by Grade 12 students
Of STI college Santa Rosa 1.4
the expectations of a consumer (includes affordability, convenience, taste,

and many more) that will solve their problems especially their reasons why

they cannot take lunch on time. The study will also try to know if the product

will tap the generation’s demand for food. The researchers are trying to find

out if the people in Complex, especially the Grade 12 Students of STI

College Santa in Complex, Balibago will embrace our product which is

derived from a Mindanaoan Delicacy.

1.3. SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

Since the present food industry always offer canned, fast food, processed

products, although it may really help many people in some ways, The

proponents of this product would like to break this mold. The food that many

famous fast food stores serve might not be that harmful in one’s eyes, but once

it entered the body, the person who consumed the bad food cannot take it back

and will suffer from its effect or it can be the other story. People’s health status

and productivity significantly lowers down because of unaffordable and

unhealthy food products available near the consumers. Instead of making

these food products better, the industry and the people behind it only make

things worse.

Focusing on the target market of this food product, the proponents strongly

believe that this product proposed will significantly positively affect the

consumers lives. Offering this accessible, cheap, delicious, easy-to-eat,

healthy and religion-friendly product will make heads turn and will fulfill the

Pinoy Pastil
A food product favored by Grade 12 students
Of STI college Santa Rosa 1.5
costumers needs. In addition, except for the fact that this product will make

people satisfied and happy, it will also make Filipino cuisine rise again.

The proponents of this study will be greatly fulfilled emotionally when this

product achieved things that are beyond the proponents, industry and the

consumer’s expectations. The product’s feasibility and potential in the food

industry is very high as the proponent’s experiences gave the idea of creating

this magnificent product. Hence, ABC Holdings will also greatly benefit on this

idea. Given that this conglomerate already ventured in the food industry, ABC

holdings already established networks on the industry and introducing this new

product will make that network strong and will cause increase in assets in the

company’s assets.

Future researchers will also benefit in this research. No one knows what the

future may hold, but there is a great probability that this research will be

relevant even though many years have passed because the product offered

here and tackled is a part of Filipino culture and history and can be passed

down from generation to generations. In addition, the idea of preparing food,

giving it another twists and creating innovations from it will be continuous

because it is natural to humans, to think of things that are still missing in a

thing or product so that people can make solutions that will fill the gap.

The last and definitely not least organization or people that will benefit from

this research is our school, STI College Santa Rosa. This research will provide

a unique opportunity to follow this area of interest and will make an important

Pinoy Pastil

contribution to the development of other researches and the school’s

reputation.

STI College Santa Rosa’s Grade 12 students are the chosen population of this

research. The proponents used a formula to calculate the required number of

respondents. By using Sloven’s formula, at 95% significance level, the total number of

respondents required is 282 students.

Grade 12 students highly considers the food product’s taste above all, followed by

the food product’s price, nutritive value, and many more. Majority of the students has

Php 50.00 and above budget for their daily food. On the other hand not all students has

the opportunity to eat lunch at the right time, exactly 28 % of the population do not take

their lunch on time because of some practical reasons. Since this study talks about our

product “Pastil” or “Binalot sa Dahon” meals, we found out that 79.1% of the

population is familiar with it and 86.2% thinks that this food product will appeal and

will be embraced by the students and workers.

Deciding on which viand will be served as pastil, 45.4% of the students, which is

the majority, favors that Beef Asado should be the viand. 94.3% of the population said

that we should add side dishes to our “binalot” meals. Making sure that the consumers
