Like how amoeba have one way of reproducing, and how Santa Claus is as-
sociated with one holiday, one-to-one relationship is about how one thing is exclu-
sively related to one thing and vice versa. It might look complicated but look at it
like the relationship of your parents, as your father is married to your mother only.
Also how one boyfriend is associated with one girlfriend only and no other parties.
One- to-one relationship happens between only two involved sides, any reoccurrence
or any addition to these sides are not considered on-to-one relationship anymore.

Same goes with the one-to-one functions in Mathematics, where one only be-
longs to another with no repetitions. Numbers between ordered pairs only occur

“Mathematics is a place where you can do things which you can't do in the real world”
-Marcus Du Sautoy

Figure 1: A tiger its cubs Figure 2: A swan with its cygnets

A function is a relation from a set of inputs to a set of possible outputs where

each input is related to exactly one output. The concept of a function is simply under-
stood using the metaphor of a function machine that takes in an object for its input and,
based on that input, spits out another object as its output. Examples are the picture
above; input are tigers and swans and theirs output are their cubs and cygnets respec-

There are many types of functions, there are quadratic function, rational function,
exponential function, and many more but there is this one particular type of function that
will going to discuss in this module, this is the one-to-one function

One-to-One Function 2
Build Your Understanding

A function is one-to-one if an only if each element of a domain is paired with a unique

element of the range and each element of the range is paired with a unique element of
the domain. In a one-to-one function, given any y value, there is only one x that can be
paired with the given y.

Examples:

Determine whether the given relation is a One-to-One function.

Example 1: The relation of PSAU student to his or her student number.
Solution: Each student of PSAU is assigned to a unique student number. Two different
students cannot be assigned to the same number. Thus, the function is one-to-one.
Example 2: Each child to his or her favourite fruit.
Solution: Two different children can have the same favourite fruit. Thus, the function is
NOT one-to-one function.
Example 3: The relation of a vehicle to its plate number.
Solution: Every vehicle has its unique corresponding plate number. Thus, it is a one-to-
one.
Example 4: The relation of a number to its cube.
Solution: Each real number has particular cube(multiplying three times to itself). Thus,
it is an example of one-to-one.
Example 5: The relation of a sim card to a cellphone number.
Solution: Every sim card has a particular number registered. Thus, it is considered a one
-to-one.

Objectives: At the end of the lesson, the learner would be able to determine the inverse
of one-to-one function.

“Do not imagine that mathematics is hard and crabbed, and repulsive to common sense.
It is merely the etherealization of common sense”
-William Thomson

Figure 1: Currency from around the world. An example of inverse function is converting
currency to other and vice versa .

A function can be defined by set of inputs that has a corresponding output. The
concept of “inverse” is not new to us. An inverse operation is an undoing operation--
that is, you are reversing the operation done to revert back to the original value. The in-
verse of a function tells us how to get back to the original value. We do this a lot in eve-
ryday life, without really thinking about it.

For example, think of a sports team. Each player has a name and a number. So if
you knew a players name and wanted to know their number, you could think of this as a
function from players to their numbers. Now, if you wanted to do the reverse, find a
players name given their number, you would be using the inverse of this function.

Inverse of One-to-One Func- 10

Build Your Understanding
Mr. Guevarra placed part of his separation pay of ₱ 30,000 into some business ven-
tures. If this amount earns ₱ 5,000 a year, in how many years will this amount dou-
ble itself?
SOLUTIONS:
The table shows the growth of Mr. Guevarra‟s separation pay.
Year (x) 0 1 2 3 4 5
Earning in pesos (y) 30,000 35,000 40,000 45,000 50,000 55,000

The relationship between the length of time (x) and the earning (y) can be written as
y = 5000x + 30,000.
Since twice the original amount is ₱ 60,000 ,then
₱60,000 = 5000x + 30,000
₱5000x = ₱30,000
x = 6 years
Therefore, Mr.. Guevarra‟s separation pay will be twice the amount in 6 years. This
problem illustrates a one-to-one function. The above table indicates that for every
value of x, there is only one value of y. Since y=f(x), then the function f(x)= 5000x +
30000 has the set of ordered pairs f(x) = {(0, 30000),(1, 35000), (2, 40000), (3,
45000), (4, 50000), (5, 55000)}.
The domain of the function f is {0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5} and its range is {(30000), (35000),
(40000), (45000), (50000), (55000)}.
If a function is such that no two ordered pairs have different x-coordinates and the
same y-coordinate, then the function is called a one-to-one function.member of the
domain. Functions that are one-to-one are invertible functions.

Another example, consider the relations P and Q:

P= {(-3, 2), (0, -1), (3,-4)}
Q= {(2, -3), (-1, 0), (-4, 3)}
The above relation is said to be the inverse relation of the other since each or-
dered paired of P is the corresponding ordered pair of Q with the abscissas and ordinates
interchanged.
Inverse of One-to-One Function 11
INVERSE FUNCTION

function (with domain B) by the rule:

 Change y to f-¹(x)

number and multiply it to two then divide it to three, if the result is 6 what is the original
number? Construct an inverse function that will provide the original number if the re-
sult is given.
Solution: we first construct the function that will compute the final number based on the
original number:

Figure 1: This is a picture of an ambulance with the word ambulance written back-
ward for the vehicle beside it can see the word correct in their mirror. This is how
graphing an inverse functions look like.

Graphing a rational function produce an asymptote which is line that a curve ap-
proaches, as it heads towards infinity while graphing n inverse function will give you
the reflection of the original function. Graphing inverse function is like a mirror an ex-
ample of this is that the word ambulance is spelled backward but if it is looked in a mir-
ror it will be the word “ambulance”.

Graphs of Inverse Function 17

Build Your Understanding

If you‟re asked to graph the inverse of a function, you can do so by remembering one
fact: a function and its inverse are reflected over the line y = x. This line passes through
the origin and has a slope of 1.
Steps in Graphing Inverse Functions

 Take a number and plug it into the first given function

 Take the value from step 1 and plug it into the inverse function of the first
function
 Then plot it in the Cartesian plane
 This work with any number and with any function and its inverse: the point
(a,b) in the function becomes the point (b,a) in its inverse

When you‟re asked to draw a function and its inverse, you may decide to draw this line
in as a dotted line; this way, it acts like a big mirror, and you can literally see the points
of the function reflecting over the line to become the inverse function points. Reflecting
over that line switches the x and the y and gives you a graphical way to find the inverse
without plotting tons of points.
Examples:

Graph f(x)=2x-4 and its inverse.

Writing down the ordered pairs, we have

(0,-4), (1,-2), (2,0), (3,2), (4,4)
(-4,0), (-2,1), (0,2), (2,3), (4,4)
Plotting these points in the graph:

Graphs of Inverse Function 18

Example 2:

Solving the inverse we would come

up with:

Substitute x with any value 5 times

(-3,0), (-2,1), (-1,2), (0,3), (1,4)
Did you know that?
(0,-3), (1,-2), (2,-1), (3,0), (4,1) Of all of his notations,
Euler's most important may be the
Plotting these points, idea of the function, as he was the
first mathematician to designate the
function by writing it f(x).

Lets Try?

GRAPH THESE PAIRS

Direction: Graph the following ordered pair in one Cartesian plane

Graphs of Inverse Function 19

Example 3:
Draw the inverse of the graph

Solution:

and plot the mirror images of some of the
points as seen in the original graph.
