HONOR YOUR PARENTS

Presentation:

How many of you have thought about what it must be like to be a mother and
father? Maybe you have a doll and you pretend that it is your child. ( Show the
doll)
Ask: “What sort of things would you do for this baby if you were her parent?”
( As they give responses, demonstrate with the doll). That is right. You must
feed it, clothe it, change its diaper, and take care of it.
If you ever watch your mother and father, you will find that they have a
lot to do. Most importantly, they have to take care of you. That is what parents
are for. They take care of you because you love them, you should honor your
mother and father. You should do all you can to make their job as parent’s
easier. That is one way you can honor them.

 Have children find and read Exodus 20:12 and Ephesians 6:1-3. Discuss
these verses for a few minutes.
Option: (Teacher can also use the bible story of Ruth Honors Naomi – Ruth1:1-
18, 4:13-15)
Discussion Questions –
Use some of the following questions to guide your discussion time. Be sure to end
with the FINAL question.
• Who does God say you should obey?
• Why does God want us to obey our parents?
• Do you obey your parents?
• When is it hard for you to obey?
• What do you do when they tell you to do something you don’t want to do?
• Does it make you angry when they tell you to do thing? Why?
• Do you ever talk back to your mom and dad? Does this please Jesus?
• Do you ever call your parents names or yell at them? Does this please Jesus?
• Do you ever talk mean about them to your friends? Does this please Jesus?
• How does Jesus want you to obey or honor your parents better?

DO NOT MURDER

Presentation:

( Hold up the balloon) Here I have a balloon. We are going to give this
balloon a name- Anger! It is not wrong to get angry. In fact, the Bible allows us
to be angry, but it says that we should not let our anger cause us to sin.
Sometimes other people make us angry. When someone offends us it is like we
are filling this balloons with air. ( Blow some air in the balloon). Maybe the
wrong done reminds you of something else that happened not very long ago.
( Blow some more) Then you start to think that he did this to you on purpose.
( Blow some more). To top it all, he did not even apologize! ( Keep blowing and
giving similar excuses until the balloon burst.)
This balloon shows how you can allow your anger to consume you. You
keep filling your head and your heart with anger. Soon you are thinking of
violent ways to teach that person a lesson. If you allow your anger to continue,
it will control your emotions until you burst. That is when people end up
getting hurt. We must learn to control our anger, for in this way we are
showing that we understand the 6th commandment.

Bible Story: Cain and Abel

The bible tells us a story about two brothers, Cain and Abel. Cain took
care of the sheep and Abel worked the ground (took care of the vegetable
garden—hard labor). One day Abel brought his best lamb he had as a gift for
God. God was very happy. Abel brought some crops that he had grown as a gift
for the God. But God was not happy with this gift. It was not the best that Cain
could have given God. Cain became angry. Cain tricked Abel to go with him into
a field where he thought no one was watching. Cain then hurt Abel, because he
was angry with him and angry that God liked his gift more.
Our hands are very special. They are to be used to praise God, clap to
God, pray, help others, hug others; they are to be used for only doing GOOD
things. When we use our hands to hurt our brother, sister or friend, that does
not make God happy. God love us very much and he is there to help us. When
you feel like you can’t be patient, kind, gentle, or humble, ask God for help. Ask
Him to fill your heart with His love. He will answer you and help you all the time!
DO NOT COMMIT ADULTERY

When a man and woman fall in love, they usually want to get married.
Marriage means making a promise that you will love each other only, the way a
husband and wife should. When a marriage promise has been broken, we call
it adultery. If a husband loves a woman who is not his wife, he has committed
adultery. Likewise, if a woman loves a man that is not her husband, she has
broken his promise. Adultery is never God’s plan for marriage. He wants us to
be faithful to each other just as He is faithful to us. God wants you to learn
about this so that when you grow up you will do the right thing.

Bible Story: DAVID AND BATHSHEBA

The story of David and Bathsheba reminds us of how great men who are called
by God are still humans and struggle with sin. ( 2 Samuel 11:1-27; 12:1-23.)

b) The events begin with King David choosing to stay home in Jerusalem while
he sent the rest of the Israelite army to fight other nations and kings. David is
relaxing and walking on the palace roof when he sees a beautiful woman
bathing on her roof. David was immediately drawn to her and sent messengers
to find out who she was. The messengers returned and told David that her name
was Bathsheba, the daughter of Eliam and the wife of Uriah. Despite David
knowing that she was married, he sent for her and slept with her. Bathsheba
later send word to David that she was pregnant.

c) David was nervous that his sin of adultery would now be found out. The King
called for Uriah to come home so that could spend a night with his wife,
Bathsheba and cover up the sin that Bathsheba was pregnant with David's
child. However, Uriah refused to sleep with his wife while his fellow men were
off fighting. David was filled with anger that his plan did not work. When Uriah
went back to war, King David sent a note to the army commander with
instructions to have Uriah put at the frontline and to withdraw so that he would
die. Bathsheba mourned her husband’s death and was then brought to King
David to be his wife.

d) The prophet Nathan visited King David and told him of the Lord's disapproval
and displeasure with David. Even though David repented of his sin, Nathan told
David that the son Bathsheba was expecting would die.

VI. CONCLUSION/LIFE APPLICATION:

 God plans for each of us to get along with our parents. It is the fifth
commandment; “ Honor your father and your mother.” When you obey
this commandment, everyone is happy. When we honor our parents, we
honor God!
 Killing is wrong because it destroys a life that God has created and has a
plan for. God command us not to murder. Remember that murder
happens when anger is not controlled.
 Remember that committing adultery is breaking a promise between a
husband and a wife. It happens when a spouse is not faithful and does
something with someone else’s husband or wife that only a married
couple should do. Disobeying this command causes many problems, and
it hurts more than just the mother and father. It can destroy the whole
family.

VII. ACTIVITY:

HONOR YOUR PARENTS

Coloring activity

DO NOT MURDER
Crafts and Ideas:
Thumbs Up! (make enough copies for each child)
 Sorting. Cut out the pictures and have children sort them into the thumbs
up/ down page. Good behavior gets a thumbs up and bad behavior gets a
thumbs down.

DO NOT COMMIT ADULTERY

Have each child make a family of “dolls” that represents his/her own
family. These mini dolls can be made out of the old-fashioned type of pins (pegs)
used to hang clothes on the line, fabric scraps, yarn, and markers. As they are
working on the members of their family ask the children to think about the
qualities of that particular person and why they are grateful to have him/her in
their family. When finished ask the children to state what they like most about
their families.
