POL ADMIN 101


(POLICE SUPERVISION AND MANAGEMENT)

I. COURSE DESCRIPTION: (BASED ON C.M.O. NO. 42)


Teaches the principles of organization and administration of law enforcement agencies. Studies
the management of line operations, staff and auxiliary services, investigative and juvenile units.
Introduces the concept of data processing; examines policies, procedures, rules and
regulations pertaining to crime prevention. Surveys concepts of protection of life and property,
detection of offenses, and apprehension of offenders.

II. COURSE OBJECTIVES

At the end of the semester, the students will be able to:

1. Know the supervisors role;


2. Distinguish between management and supervision;
3. Be aware of the basic supervisory responsibilities;
4. Be acquainted with the supervisor’s function in organization, administration, and management;
5. Be familiar with the causes of Employee dissatisfaction, grievances and complaints;
6. Discuss the elements of leadership, supervision and command presence;
7. Describe different supervisory/leadership “styles”;
8. Know the various elements of the chief executive’s activities as describe by Gulick’s and discuss how
each applies to the first-line supervisor;
9. Distinguish between Unity of Command and Span of Control;
10. Illustrate the essential nature of completed staff work;
11. Know the essentials of communicating;
12. Know some psychological aspects of supervision;
13. Discuss some of the methods for gathering and recording employee performance data which can be
used as a basis for personnel evaluations;
14. Know the principles of interviewing.
15. Know the special problems in counseling;
16. Be acquainted with the principles, policies, and practices of discipline.

III. TIME ALLOTMENT

Fifty (50) hours of class instruction and four hours of periodical examination. A total of fifty four (54)
hours of class meetings in one semester.

IV. CREDIT

Three (3) hours a week; 1 semester; Three (3) units

VII. CLASSROOM ETIQUETTE: Silence all cell phones and electronic devices. Text messaging is not permitted during class. Violations of this policy will result in loss of
classroom participation points. Students are expected to arrive on time and stay for the entire class. If a student is late or must leave early, please minimize
disruption to the class. A late or early leave counts as ½ an absence. No side conversations or other distracting behaviors will be tolerated. Respect others by being
polite and considerate.

VIII. PLAGIARISM: If the instructor has evidence of plagiarism or cheating in any form you will fail the course

IX. MAKE-UP ASSIGNMENTS: Make-up quizzes and tests will be at the instructor’s discretion. The writing assignment must be turned in on the due date or before. There
will be a 10 point reduction in grade for every day beyond the due date.
