PRECAUTIONS AND SPECIFICATIONS

1
Precautions

Installation

Avoid operating this machine in:

-A high humidity environment

-A high temperature environment

Advisory Caution

-This machine was designed for a specific capacity, avoid overloading your equipment.

Handle with care. Violent shocks could alter and/or impair adjustments and cause
damage to the machine.

WARNING!

Disconnect the power source from the machine and its peripheral units before
undertaking any repairs in order to avoid physical injuries.

Always wear safety glasses when the machine is in operation.

CAUTION!

Handle with care. Violent shocks could alter and/or impair adjustments and cause
damage to the machine.

CAUTION!

HYDRAULIC SYSTEM (if applicable)

In order to comply with the rules and regulations on the transportation of dangerous
goods, the hydraulic fluid has been removed from the hydraulic system of your machine
prior to shipping.

IMPORTANT: THE HYDRAULIC SYSTEM MUST BE FILLED PRIOR TO START UP

WITH APPROXIMATELY 30 GALLONS (113 L). PLEASE REFER TO THE ASSEMBLY
PRESS (MP-20) INSTRUCTION MANUAL FOR MORE DETAIL ON THE HYDRAULIC
UNIT.

Filling the hydraulic system

1- Make sure that there is no water or any residue in the reservoir.
2- Check and clean all hoses and connections. Connect hoses to their appropriate
locations.
3- Fill the reservoir to the maximum level (see the level window). (It is preferable to filter
the oil at 10 microns absolute (Beta 150) before filling the power unit).
4- If the motor and the pump are beside the reservoir, make sure that the ball valve that is
between the reservoir and the pump is open. The handle must be in the same direction
as the hose and not at 90°.
5- If it’s a “variable volume piston pump”, make sure that there is oil in the case of the
pump. To verify remove the hose that is on top of the pump, oil should come out of the
pump, if not, fill pump to the edge with the same oil.
6- In order to bleed the air, it is necessary to jog the pump until the pump is no longer
noisy. To facilitate this process, it is preferable to actuate at the same time the control
valve of a hydraulic motor. Depending on the type of machine the valve could be near
the motor (activated manually) or on a collector (activated by the control panel.
Caution : should not use a cylinder to do this procedure, there is a risk of
infiltration of air inside the cylinder, and its operation could become spongy. If,
after several attempts, the pump remains noisy, contact the customer service
department of Doucet Machineries Inc. Do not run the pump empty, there will be a
risk of damage.
7- After the starting and while the pump is in operation, make sure that there is a
sufficient amount of oil in the reservoir. The oil level should maintain at all times
between the center and the maximum of the level window. Add oil as needed.
8- Initially, there will remain bubbles of air in the hydraulic system. Consequently, it is
normal to have intermittent noises during its operation, these noises will disappear with
time.
9- Use TEXACO H68 oil or equivalent.

PRE-START VERIFICATIONS
The pre-start verification allows you to identify if any components present anomalies. The
identification and resolution of these anomalies will allow you to manufacture a quality
product for many years to come.

Drive chain tension

To adjust drive chain tension:

1- Loosen bolts (A).

2- Adjust tension by sliding base plate (B).

3- Retighten bolts (A) when proper tension is obtained.

10

FAO speed
The speed of the FAO can be adjusted. The FAO transfer chain must be 5 to 10
f/min (1.5 to 3 m/min) faster than the main chain of the finger jointer in order to clear the
way for the jointer lugs to return. The flow control is located behind the front door of the
FAO. Every time you change the speed of the finger jointer, it is really important to change
the speed of the FAO.

Air pressure adjustment

There are two air pressure regulators located on the column of the feeder. The
highest one controls air pressure in the press and the lower one controls air pressure of
the feeder cylinder. They should be adjusted at these pressures:

• Press: 0-4 psi (0 bar-0.3 bar)

• Feeder cylinder: 35-65 psi (2.4 bar-4.5 bar)

4
OPERATION PARAMETERS
In this chapter, we will see the operation parameters that you will have to adjust
according to the product thickness and width. Each time you change one of these two
variables, you will have to adjust one or many operation parameters.

Press height
Press height must be adjusted in order to maintain the product when it comes out of
the finger jointer. The product must be well maintained until it is feed into the tunnel

To adjust press height:

1- Loosen handles (A).

2- Place a piece of the product under the press.

3- Using crank (B), lower press until it slightly touches the product.

4- Remove product and lower press 1/16” to 3/32” (1.6mm to 2.4mm) more.

5- Retighten handle (A) when proper height is obtained.

A B

DOUCET MACHINERIES INC.

13

Feeder height
Feeder height must be adjusted in order to feed the product into the tunnel.

To adjust feeder height:

1- Loosen handles (A).

2- Using a piece of the product, simulate the arrival of the product under the feeder belt to
see where it will touch the feeder belt.

3- Using crank (B), lower press. The feeder belt should slightly touch the product when
the cylinder (C) is completely out.

4- Retighten handle (A) when proper height is obtained.

DOUCET MACHINERIES INC.

14

Photocell adjustment
The purpose of this photocell is to send a signal to lower the cylinder. The cylinder
must lower when the product is at 1/8” (3.2mm) from the fence. Respecting this
adjustment will prevent the product pieces from bouncing off the fence.

Alarm display screen

1 2

Note: identification numbers on the illustrations correspond to the same identification

numbers in the following pages.

1- FAO full light

The finger jointer and the SAI will stop and have to be restarted if the FAO full alarm
occurs. This alarm is caused by a pieces staying for a longer period of time than usual
under the photocell located at the corner of the FAO. This can be caused by an
accumulation of product with no normal spacing between them. The photocell will detect
them as an only piece and will conclude to a jammed piece. A jammed piece at the corner
of the FAO will also cause this alarm.

There are two possible causes for the pieces to jam or accumulate in the corner of
the FAO: a piece is turned, flipped, broken, wedged or the tunnel is full. To restart, simply
take out pieces that caused the stop. If there are just two or three pieces accumulated on
the FAO chains, you should not have to recreate the spacing between the pieces.
However, if there are more than three wood pieces with no spacing, it might be necessary
to recreate the spacing between the pieces.

If the alarm occurs because the MT tunnel is full, the alarm should disappear when
the product starts to move in the tunnel. The tunnel can be full if the capacity of the press,
in terms of linear feet per minute, is exceeded or if there is an alarm causing the press or
tunnel to stop. If so, another alarm light will turn on simultaneously with the FAO full light
on the press-tunnel control panel. This will be the real alarm that causes the stop.

DOUCET MACHINERIES INC.

17

2- Piece wrong FAO light

There are two photocells that detect the product in the FAO press (one on each
side of the press). If for any reason, the two photocells do not read the product
simultaneously, the machine stops and this light turns on. This alarm is caused by a piece
that did not transfer correctly from the finger jointer to the FAO.

There are four concave wheels located at the end of the finger jointer that force the
pieces to move on a diagonal pattern. These wheels position the product pieces in the
proper position to be held by the FAO press. The proper position is when the end of the
product sticks out a minimum length of 1/2" (12.7 mm) from the rear of the press, to allow
glued joint to be away from the press belts.

This alarm is usually caused by product being too thin which were not able to be
transferred by the four wheels. These pieces must be removed. If the pieces seem to
transfer correctly, maybe the photocells need to be readjusted. If the pieces are of normal
thickness and the transfer seems to be weak, you may need to adjust the height of the
wheel support or to replace the wheels.
