I. Vocabulary

Your teeth are composed of four dental tissues. Three of them—enamel, dentin and cementum—are hard
tissues. The fourth tissue—pulp, or the center of the tooth that contains nerves, blood vessels and
connective tissue—is a soft, or non-calcified, tissue.

The Anatomy of a Tooth

Fill in the gaps with the correct tooth part

 …………………….Hard calcified tissue covering the dentin in the crown of tooth. Because it
contains no living cells, tooth enamel cannot repair damage from decay or from wear. Only a dentist
can correct these conditions.
 ……………………….The visible part of your tooth. It is normally covered by enamel.
 ………………………Soft tissues that cover and protect the roots of your teeth and cover teeth that
have not yet erupted.

 ………………………..The space occupied by the pulp—the soft tissue at the center of your teeth
containing nerves, blood vessels and connective tissue.
 ………………………The area where the crown joins the root.
 ………………………..That part of the tooth that is beneath enamel and cementum. It contains
microscopic tubules (small hollow tubes or canals). When dentin loses its protective covering
(enamel), the tubules allow heat and cold or acidic or sticky foods to stimulate the nerves and cells
inside the tooth, causing sensitivity.
 …………………………The part of the jaw that surrounds the roots of the teeth.
 ……………………….The portion of the pulp cavity inside the root of a tooth; the chamber within the
root of the tooth that contains the pulp.
 ………………………Hard connective tissue covering the tooth root, giving attachment to the
periodontal ligament.
 ………………………… A system of collagenous connective tissue fibers that connect the root of a
tooth to its socket.

Teeth conditions- Fill in the gaps with the tooth conditions, corresponding to each definition.
Choose from the list: teeth grinding, gingivitis, tooth sensitivity, tooth decay, periodontitis, cavities,
plaque, overbite, tartar, underbite.

 ..................................Bacteria evade removal by brushing and saliva and damage the enamel and deeper
structures of teeth. Most cavities occur in molars and premolars.
 ...............................A general name for disease of the teeth, including cavities and periodontitis.
 ……………………..Inflammation of the deeper structures of the teeth (periodontal ligament, jawbone, and
cementum). Poor oral hygiene is usually to blame.
 …………………….Inflammation of the surface portion of the gums, around and between the crowns of the
teeth. Plaque and tartar build-up can lead to gingivitis.
 ……………………A sticky, colourless film made of bacteria and the substances they secrete. Plaque
develops quickly on teeth after eating sugary food, but can be easily brushed off.
 ……………………If plaque is not removed, it mixes with minerals to become tartar, a harder substance. It
requires professional cleaning for removal.
 ……………………The upper teeth protrude significantly over the lower teeth.
 ……………………The lower teeth protrude significantly past the upper teeth.
 ………………………Stress, anxiety or sleep disorders can cause teeth grinding, usually during sleep. A
dull headache or sore jaw are possible symptoms.
 ……………………When one or more teeth become sensitive to hot or cold, it may mean the dentine is
exposed.

II. Speaking and Writing

Fill in the missing gaps of the cover letter (one word only for each gap) and then write a cover letter of your
own (180-200 words).
