COMPARING AND ORDERING DECIMALS
THROUGH TEN THOUSANDTHS

A DepEd-BEAM Distance Learning Program supported by the Australian Agency for International Development
To the Learner

Have a pleasant day to you! This module is enjoyable. This is in

continuation with the previous lesson. I hope you will enjoy answering
all the given questions.

Let’s Learn This

Comparing and Ordering Decimals through ten thousandths

Let’s Try This

Write <,> or = on the blanks to make the sentences true.

1. 0.114 _________ 0.2202 _________ 0.2212
2. 7.787 _________ 7.877 __________ 7.8870
3. 0.1090 _______ 0.1009 _________ 0.109
4. 12.12 _________ 1.212 __________ 1.222
5. 0.999 _________ 0.1000 _________ 0.0100

Let’s Study This

A. Read and analyze the problem.

A strand of human hair is about 0.005 centimeter thick. Gold
can be hammered to a thickness of 0.000005 centimeter. Which
do you think is thicker, a strand of hair or a gold leaf?

- 47 -
To compare two decimals like 0.005 and 0.000005 which have
different numbers of decimal places, we make the decimal places
to the right of the decimal point the same. This can be done by
annexing or adding zeros to the right of the numeral. Hence, a
stand of human hair is thicker than the gold leaf.

B. Thinking about the shaded squares can help you compare

decimals.

0.43 is < 0.59

You can also write zeros to help you write a group of decimals in
order from the least to the greatest.

2.9 2.5 2.65

So, the order from least to

2.90 2.50 2.65 greatest is: 2.5, 2.65, 2.9

- 48 -
Let’s Do This

Write <, >, or = inside to compare the numbers.

1. 5.376 5.876 4. 178.3 179.83

2. 18.100 18.100 5. 0.7823 0.94

3. 3.6748 3.6478

Let’s Do More

Write in order from the least to greatest. Write them inside the box.

a. 6.734, 5.734, 5.729

b. 9.021, 9.100, 9.022, 9.236

- 49 -
c. 2.002, 2.220, 2.025

Let’s Remember This

 How do you compare decimals?

What are the relation symbols used in comparing decimals?
What are the steps in comparing and ordering decimals

To compare two decimals with the same number, of

decimal places, disregard the decimal points and think of the
decimals as whole numbers. The larger is the one whose
number value is greater. The larger number has the greater
value.

Let’s Test Ourselves

Order numbers from least to greatest, write your answer on the

spaces provided.

2. 2. ____________, ____________, _____________

- 51 -
3. 3. ____________, ____________, ______________

4. 4. ____________, _____________, ______________

5. 5. _____________, _____________, _____________
