C10200 Memory upgrade

procedure

This field notice covers the procedures for upgrading a Casa C10200 CMTS with the
new 1GB DIMM memory module on the SMM card. This upgrade doubles the
existing memory on the C10200.

Device information
Casa P/N MOD-0013-00, (1GB, DDR1, SODIMM)
Manufacturer’s part number: VR4DU286428EBKS1

The upgrade steps are summarized as follows:

1. Power down the C10200 if the system is non-redundant.
2. Attach an electrostatic discharge strap (ESD) and then remove the SMM from the
C10200.
3. Locate and remove the existing 512MB DIMM from the connector on the SMM.
4. Install the new 1GB memory DIMM.
5. Reinstall the SMM in either slot 6 or slot 7 on the C10200.
6. Reapply power to the C10200 for non-redundant SMM systems.

Step 1. Power the C10200 off

If the system is non-redundant where only one SMM is present, you will need to
power off the system. See the Casa Systems —C10200 Hardware Guide for the
correct power-off procedure.

If the system is redundant where there are two SMMs present (slots 6 and 7), you are
not required to power the system off. You will need to upgrade the redundant SMM
first, reinstall the SMM, and then pull the active SMM to force a failover to the
redundant.

Step 2. Attach an ESD strap and remove the SMM

See the Casa Systems —C10200 Hardware Guide for the correct procedure for
attaching an ESD strap and removing the SMM from the C10200 chassis.

Step 3. Locate and remove the 512MB DIMM

Figure 1 shows the 512MB DIMM location on the SMM. Once you have removed the
SMM, locate the DIMM in the upper left quadrant on the card. There is only one
DIMM present on the SMM.

Remove the DIMM from its connector by carefully and simultaneously spreading the
retaining clips that secure the DIMM. As you spread the retaining clips, the DIMM
will spring up to a 45-degree angle in the connector, as shown in Figure 2.

Step 4. Install the 1 Gigabyte DIMM

Using Figure 2 as a reference, handle the DIMM by the edges and carefully position
the new DIMM into the connector at a 45-degree angle until you feel it snap into
place. Then, press down on the DIMM until the side retaining clips “catch” and lock
the DIMM in position.

The DIMM is now properly installed on the SMM.

Step 5. Reinstall the SMM

See the Casa Systems —C10200 Hardware Guide for the correct procedure for
attaching an ESD strap and installing the SMM in the C10200 chassis.

If the system is redundant where there are two SMMs present, (slots 6 and 7), you will
need to repeat Steps 1 to 5 to upgrade the second SMM. Install the SMM that you just
upgraded, then pull the active SMM to force a failover to the redundant SMM (that
you just upgraded).

Step 6. Power the C10200 on

If the system is non-redundant where only one SMM is present, you will need to
power on the system. See the Casa Systems —C10200 Hardware Guide for the correct
power-on procedure.
