WORK EXPERIENCE; Holman Fenwick & Willan, Shipping Litigation Department,


April 1988 to March 1991 working with Graham Hogg,
predominantly dry shipping work, cargo claims, charterparty
disputes, bill of lading disputes, handling many cases for the
West of England P & I Club. Assisting other partners in
general commercial litigation, including commercial
contracts, banking, insurance.

Penningtons, Shipping Department, January 1992 to


March 1995, working with Hugh Bryant, dealing with dry
shipping work, as above, as well as oil pollution claim,
research on oil pollution legislation, drafting rule book for
new P & I Club providing cover for oil pollution risks within
U.S.A. waters (Shoreline). Also assisted other partners in
the firm with general commercial litigation, contractual
claims, claims relating to avoidance of cover under
insurance policies, general banking matters and company
litigation, disputes involving Memoranda and Articles of
Association, directors' obligations and liability, corporate
veil and shareholders' rights.

Williamson & Horrocks, March 1997 to December 1998,


as consultant dealing with general shipping work including
some "wet" work, in the form of assisting on collision claims
/ casualties etc, as well as general commercial litigation,
including building disputes (non-completion of work / failure
to pay under building contract), breach of contract cases
involving disputes between architects, judicial review
against government bodies. Some aviation work including
airline training bonds, restrictive practices, supply of aircraft ,
sale of aircraft, pilots' breach of contract.

Dabelstein & Passehl, January 1998 to March 2003, niche


shipping and international trade firm, dealing with all types
of dry shipping claims, ship arrests, international trade
disputes, cross-border litigation, CMR disputes, arbitrations,
drafting of contracts, review of standard contractual terms
and agreements including exclusion / exemption clauses,
marine insurance, conflict of laws, taking security, security
for costs and means and methods of protecting funds
provided as loans for specific purposes. Court procedural
work, including drafting claim forms both in rem and in
personam, drafting affidavits and witness statements,
applications for registration of foreign judgments in the UK,
enforcement procedures and interlocutory applications,
including writs of fieri facias, garnishee proceedings and
freezing orders both national and worldwide, some
insolvency work. Involved in some financial work, including
advising on the taking of security, Quistclose trusts, and
ship finance. Predominantly German client base, with a lot
of work for German P & I Clubs, in particular Trampfahrt /
Antra and also Darag.

international trade firm, combination of dry and wet shipping
form, bill of lading and charterparty disputes including cargo
claims, laytime and demurrage disputes, off hire and
deduction from hire, unsafe port disputes, collision claims,
international trade disputes / sale of goods, LMAA
arbitrations, marine insurance claims, general average
claims, drafting and negotiation of guarantees . Extensive
Chinese client base.

specialised commercial pupillage with Richard Jacobs QC,
September 1987 to March 1988. Including shipping work,
international trade, company and commercial disputes,
insurance (asbestos claims - the Lloyds syndicate
