The Rizals is considered one of the biggest families during their time. Domingo Lam-co, the family's
paternal ascendant was a full-blooded Chinese who came to the Philippines from Amoy, China in the
closing years of the 17th century and married a Chinese half-breed by the name of Ines de la Rosa.
Researchers revealed that the Mercado-Rizal family had also traces of Japanese, Spanish, Malay
and Even Negrito blood aside from Chinese.
Ines dela Rosa was Jose Rizal's great great grandmother. She was known as a Sangley in Luzon.
She belonged to an entrepreneurial family in Binondo. She is the daughter of Agustin Chin-co, a rich
Chinese merchant from Chuanchow and Jacinta Rafaela, a Chinese mestiza who lived in Parian.
When she decided to marry Domingo Lam-Co, de la Rosa was half as of Lam-co’s age then.

LAM-CO O DOMINGO LAM-CO was the father of the father of the grandfather of Jose. He is from
Siongque, a district on Changchow province Fukien. He was close with two friars (Fr. Francisco
Marquez and Fr. Juan Caballero) who encouraged him to reside in the Dominican estate of San Isidro
Labrador in Biñan, Laguna. Lam-co was very helpful to the development of water irrigation in their
area, thus making it one of the wealthiest parts of the estate.
FRANCISCO MERCADO SR. was the father of the grandfather of Rizal. Francisco, like his father,
was a leader and an influential person in Biñan. He bacame He was said to be considered as a rich
man since he owns numerous carabao. He was elected as gobernadorcillo (municipal mayor) of the
town. He was popular in town that he often acted as the godfather when there’s a baptism or
wedding.
JUAN MERCADO was Jose's grandfather. He was also elected as capitan del pueblo of the town in
1808, 1813, and 1823. He was also known as "Capitan Pueblo". He died when his son, Francisco
Engracio Mercado, was eight years old.
Cirila Alejandro was a Chinese mestiza. She and Francis had 13 children and lived in a large stone
house in Biñan. He and his wife lived in a humble way.
FRANCISCO ENGRACIO MERCADO was the youngest son of Capitan Juan. Since he his father, his
mother took care of him. Francisco helped his widowed mother in running their business. He studied
Latin and philosophy at the Colegio de San Jose in Manila. This was where he met his wife, Teodora
Alonso Realonda, who was studying in Colegio de Santa Rosa.
He raised his family by rented lands from the Dominican Order. From that land, they produced rice,
corns, and sugarcane. They even had poultry in their backyard.
Eugenio Ursua. His wife was Benigna and their child is Regina.
Reginia Ursua married to Manuel de Quintos their child is Brigida.
Brigida Quintos is married to LORENZO ALBERTO and they were blessed with 5 children: NARCISA,
TEODORA, GREGORIO, JOSE at MANUEL.
Brigida de Quintos was an educated housewife who attended to her family's needs.
Lorenzo was a capitan-municipal of Biñan, Laguna, a representative in the Spanish Cortes, a Knight
of the Order of Isabela the Catholic and a surveyor by profession.
In accordance to the decree issued by Governor-General Narciso Claveria in 1849, their family
adopted the surname "Realonda."
Teodora. She was the mother of Jose who was the second child of Lorenzo Alonso and Brijida de
Quintos. She studied at the Colegio de Santa Rosa. She was a business-minded woman, courteous,
religious, hard-working and well-read. She was born in Santa Cruz, Manila on November 14, 1827
and died in 1913 in Manila.
Saturnina Rizal Mercado de Hidalgo or Saturnina Hidalgo was the eldest child of the Rizal-Alonzo
marriage. Married Manuel Timoteo Hidalgo of Tanauan, Batangas.
Si Paciano Rizal Mercado Y Alonzo Realonda was the only brother of Jose Rizal and the second
child. Studied at San Jose College in Manila; became a farmer and later a general of the Philippine
Revolution.
Narcisa Alonso Realonda Rizal Mercado was the third child. She arried Antonio Lopez at Morong,
Rizal and had 9 children; a teacher and musician.
Olympia Rizal was the fourth child. Married Silvestre Ubaldo; died in 1887 from childbirth.
Lucia Rizal was the fifth child. She got married to Matriano Herbosa.
Si Maria Rizal naman was the sixth child. She got married to Daniel Faustino Cruz ng Biñan, Laguna
Si Jose Protacio Rizal Mercado Y Alonso Realonda was the second male child and seventh among
the siblings. He was often called "Pepe".
Concepcion Rizal was the eighth child. She is nicknamed as "concha". She died at the age of three.
Si Josefa Mercado Rizal was the ninth among the siblings. She was fondly called "Panggoy" and was
an epileptic. She became a leader of Women's section in Katipunan.
Si Trinidad Mercado Rizal is the 10th child in the family. She was called "Trining". She died a spinster
and was the last to die among all of Rizal's family.
Si Soledad Mercado Rizal was the youngest in the family. She married Pantaleon Quintero and was a
friend of Leonor Rivera.

Ang kanyang tiyuhin na si Manuel alberto ay nabalaka sa pisikal na kinaiya ni Pepe.
Narrator: iyang tiyuhin pod ang nagtudlo sa kay jose kung paano mahalin at alagaan ang kinaiyahan.
