An Overview on what consumers spend on beef and on which ‘cuts’ specifically:

A report by the Agribusiness and Economics Research Unit (AERU) shows that Americans are

willing to spend the highest premium over the three cuts of beef produced ‘100% grass-fed’ at the
following prices per pound:
a. $US2.50/lb. for ground beef

b. $US2.70/lb. for top sirloin steak

c. $US4.10/lb. for ribeye steak.

Correspondently, consumers were willing to pay 35 per cent, 15 per cent and 23 per cent more for
ground beef, top sirloin steak and ribeye steak produced ‘100% grass-fed’.

The second and third highest premiums were for beef produced ‘100% pasture raised’ and
organic production. The results show that consumers were willing to pay for:

a. 100% pasture raised production at $US2.00/lb (29%) more for ground beef, $US2.18/lb (12%)
more for top sirloin steak, and $US3.29/lb (14%) more for ribeye steak.
b. Organic production at $US1.82/lb (23%) more for ground beef, $US1.72/lb (10%) more for top
sirloin steak, and $US2.60/lb (11%) more for ribeye steak.

 A new trend that will completely change the face of the food industry, especially the meat

industry, are “Plant-based menu items”. In 2017 alone, U.S. consumers shelled out nearly

$700 million on meat substitutes, which is a jump from 25% jump from 2012 and Nielsen

reports that annual plant-based food sales now exceed $3.5 billion. Providing trendy

alternative proteins can be a powerful differentiator in today's restaurant market.

White Castle, a restaurant company in Kansas, USA, has found big success in introducing

plant-based protein alternatives, launching its meat-free Impossible Burger slider at all 377

restaurant locations nationwide in September 2018 following a test at select locations in April.

The fast food chain is the first mainstream restaurant to offer a meat analogue like the

Impossible Burger — which cooks like real beef — spurring more than 63,000 fans to sign an

online petition asking McDonald's to adopt similar menu items. Earlier in January 2019, Carl's

Jr. launched a plant-based version of its signature “Famous Star burger” — swapping in a

Beyond Meat patty for beef — at 1,100 restaurant locations through the month of January.

 Viral post talking about beef

A recent post that has gone viral on social media, has raised concerns about whether vendors

might be selling meat containing cancerous tumours. The article was highlighted by US news

channel ‘western mass news’. The post as on 24th July 2019, shows the aftereffects and also an

interview with the owner of Arnold’s Meats in Massachusetts, who says that meat that

contains cancer is disposed off immediately even if it happens to show up in the shop despite

monitoring from the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Arnold's Meats is a USDA federally

inspected wholesale meat business, which means all their products are tracked specifically for

this purpose.
