COURSEWORK 1- ASSIGNMENT (GROUP & INDIVDUAL)

Introduction
Coursework 1 is divided into two sections – Section A for Group Assignment and Section B
for Individual Assignment.

Assume you and your team members are working in the investment department of Asia Assets
Sdn Bhd, an investment management company. Your company is considering making an
investment based on any 3 companies by buying its shares through Bursa Malaysia.

Instructions for Section A – Group Assignment (4-5 persons to a group):


You are required to choose any 3 companies listed in Bursa Malaysia. Download data
from www.finance.yahoo.com to solve following tasks:

a) Describe the background of the companies from annual report. (History, top
management, business nature, business performance, profit etc)

b) Download the monthly stock price for the all selected companies, together with
KLCI index for the last 10 years (2009- 2018). For each company, calculate the
average yearly rate of return, standard deviation and beta over the period. (Refers
to appendix for instruction, the soft copy of the appendix will distribute during the
lecture)
c) Form a two securities portfolio with the chosen companies. Calculate the portfolio
return and portfolio risk for the portfolio. Assume you invest equally to both
stocks (For instance: Stock A & Stock B, Stock A & Stock C, Stock C & Stock B).
Refers to Appendix for correlation calculation).

d) Briefly summarize the overall results at the end of each analysis.

Instructions for Section B (Individual Assignment – each group member working alone):

You are required to critically examine your group assignment report and: -

i) Based on the above analysis [section (b) and (c) ], discuss and comment what will be the
forecasted future shares price movement and overall financial performance for the three
(3) companies in future one year. (with appropriate supporting facts and figures).

ii) Give your own recommendation to Asia Assets Sdn Bhd which portfolio selection of
the two companies should be selected for their investment. Provide your reason(s) to
support your view. Your recommendation should be based on the analysis done in
sections (b) and (c) above.

Important Notes to Students (applicable to both Sections A & B)

1) The length of your group assignment should not exceed 2,000 words. The word count for
the individual assignment should not exceed 600 words. Variation (either way) must not
exceed 10% from the required number of words. Word count (based on Microsoft Word)
must be stated at the end of the group report and at the end of each member’s individual
assignment. Students are not to use Wikipedia and Investopedia for these assignments. Your
IFA tutor may consider deduction of 1 mark each for non-compliance of the above.

2) For the group assignment, students are required to group themselves into teams of 5-6
persons for their assignment. Each team is required to submit a type-written list of the team
members and 3 company chosen to their IFA tutor by the end of Week 3.

3) The coursework should be type-written using Times New Roman font (size 12) with line
spacing of 1.5.
4) Students are to submit a Group Member Appraisal form to ensure total participation of each
member (one form per group member). 10 marks will be deducted for individual
participation of less than 50% and 20 marks for 0% participation.

5) If any part of these assignments is taken from other sources, this must be properly referenced
in the assignments using Harvard referencing, otherwise it will be considered plagiarism
which will be severely dealt with. The similarity index of the Turnitin report must be less
than 15%. A plagiarism statement must be signed by all group members.

6) You MUST submit your coursework during your respective IFA tutorial class in Week 10.
Marks will be deducted for late submission (in accordance with the College’s current
policy). No coursework will be accepted after 7 calendar days from submission date.

7) Calculations of financial ratios should be attached to the Appendices section together with
statements of financial position and statements of profit and loss of the selected company. Do
not attach the entire annual report(s).

8) The report should be arranged according to the following sequence:

 Cover page
 Coursework feedback form
 Assessment criteria (group and individuals)
 Group member appraisal forms
 Plagiarism statement
 Turnitin report (only the first page)
