Investigation on Properties of
Sawdust reinforced PVC Composite

ABSTRACT

A composite material is made by combining two or more materials to give

a unique combination of properties, one of which is made of stiff, long fibres
and the other, a binder or matrix which holds the fibres in place. Fibre reinforced
polymer composites have played a dominant role for long time in a variety of
applications for their high strength and modulus. The fibre which serves as a
reinforcement in reinforced plastics may be synthetic or natural. Past studies
show that only synthetic fibres such as glass, carbon etc., have been used in fibre
reinforced plastics. Although glass and other synthetic reinforced plastics
possess high specific strength but they are not biodegradable.
In furniture and paper industries, huge amount of wood flakes and wood
flours in the form of sawdust are always found as wastes. Because of high
accessibility and low cost of the sawdust, they can easily be incorporated with
polymers in order to improve properties of reinforced polymers such as high
strength and ease of processing.
In this investigation, an attempts made to produce PVC resin reinforced
with Saw dust at different fibre loading. The composite material is fabricated by
using Hydraulic Press and the test samples are cut as per ASTM Standards to
carryout Mechanical Properties like Tensile Strength, Impact Strength. Water
absorption test is conducted by keeping the test samples in the water for 24
hours.
